Raychem 15HTV2-CT Self-Regulating Heating Cable, 205 C

Description

15HTV2-CT is the 15 W class, 200-277 Vac version of the Raychem HTV, the highest-temperature self-regulating cable in the Raychem industrial range. The datasheet gives a 400 F (205 C) maintain limit, 500 F (260 C) intermittent exposure and part number P000004324.

Self-regulating heat tracing for pipes held at up to 205 C

HTV has a solid construction: a high power retention (HPR) heating core with pressure-extruded electrical insulation, 14 AWG nickel-plated copper conductors, a Ni-Cu braid and a high temperature fluoropolymer outer jacket (-CT). The datasheet credits this design with superior heat transfer, reliable output over a long life and easy stripping and flexing.

The code 15HTV2-CT reads 15 W class, HTV family, 2 for 200-277 Vac (HTV1 is 100-130 Vac) and -CT for the fluoropolymer jacket. Eight wattage levels are offered, from 3 to 20 W at both voltages and a 28 W code at 240 V only.

Features stated in the datasheet

  • Maintain up to 400 F (205 C) power on; up to 500 F (260 C) intermittent for 2000 hours cumulative, longer durations allowed between 400 F and 500 F.
  • Minimum 95 percent power retention after 10 years at 400 F (205 C); 30 years or more design life depending on application; 10 year product warranty.
  • Certified for hazardous and ordinary areas; chemical resistance to organic and aqueous inorganic chemicals and corrosives.
  • Traced surface type metal; minimum installation temperature -76 F (-60 C).

Ordering codes and choosing a rating

Fifteen codes are listed: 3HTV1-CT P000004312, 5HTV1-CT P000004313, 8HTV1-CT P000004314, 10HTV1-CT P000004315, 12HTV1-CT P000004316, 15HTV1-CT P000004317, 20HTV1-CT P000004318 at 120 V; the 240 V set 3HTV2-CT P000004319 to 20HTV2-CT P000004325, with 15HTV2-CT as P000004324; and 28HTV2-CT 2000003152. Temperature class rises with power, so a hazardous-area design must check the T-rating of the chosen W class.

A 20 A breaker at start-up 0 F allows 176 ft of 15HTV2-CT while the 20 W code gets 135 ft (datasheet values), so output class also drives the number of circuits.

Installation and test notes

The Raychem manual H57274 treats HTV with the other self-regulating cables: glass-tape attachment, loops at heat sinks, Raychem-only components and ground-fault protection. For HTV the manual specifies a separate stripping step (step 5D), and states HTV heating cables and components are cFMus approved for Class I Div. 2 (zone 2) Groups A-D.

When the pipe will see temperatures near the maximum, check the connection-kit limits: the manual lists internal limiting temperatures of 151 C to 155 C for several kits, which are met when pipe temperature stays below 250 C.

Where it is used

General engineering note: 205 C maintain is the range for lines that might otherwise be steam traced, such as heavy fuel oil, bitumen, sulphur-bearing or wax-bearing products and hot caustic. Refineries, terminals and process plants in the Gulf use such cables where steam is unavailable or impractical.

The cable also withstands excursions to 260 C with power off, such as steam purging, which is a common event on process lines.

Information to send with an RFQ for the Raychem 15HTV2-CT Self-Regulating Heating Cable

Heat-tracing cable is quoted per metre or per reel, but the cable alone rarely completes a circuit. To get an accurate offer for the Raychem 15HTV2-CT Self-Regulating Heating Cable, list the pipe sizes and lengths to be traced, the maintain temperature, the lowest expected ambient temperature and the highest exposure temperature during steam-out or process upsets. State the supply voltage, the breaker rating you plan to use and whether the area is classified, with the gas group and temperature class required.

  • Total cable length, with an allowance for valves, flanges, pumps and supports.
  • Connection kits: power connection, splice, tee and end seal, plus attachment tape and labels.
  • Thermal insulation type and thickness, because heat loss drives the watts per metre needed.
  • Control method: ambient sensing, line sensing or an electronic controller with monitoring.

With this data the circuit can be checked against the maximum circuit lengths in the manufacturer’s design tables before the order is placed, which avoids nuisance breaker trips during cold start-up.
