Raychem 10VPL2-CT Power-Limiting Heating Cable, 200-277 V
Description
10VPL2-CT is the 10 W class, 200-277 Vac member of the Raychem VPL family of high-temperature power-limiting heating cables. A coiled resistor alloy element wrapped around two bus wires lets the cable be cut to length on site, and the datasheet lists the code under part number 892652-000.
A power-limiting parallel cable for hot lines and steam-purge duty
Power-limiting cables differ from self-regulating cables in the heating element: a coiled resistor alloy wire contacts two parallel bus wires at intervals, and the distance between contact points forms the heating zone. Output decreases as temperature rises, but the power-temperature curve is flatter than a self-regulating core, which gives a low start-up current and strong output at elevated temperature.
VPL is intended for freeze protection and process-temperature maintenance needing high power and high exposure temperature, up to 455 F (235 C) in the best case, with routine steam purges and excursions to 500 F (260 C) with power off. The code reads 10 W class, VPL family, 2 for the 200-277 Vac group (VPL1 100-120 Vac, VPL4 400-480 Vac) and -CT fluoropolymer jacket.
Features stated in the datasheet
- Maximum exposure temperature 500 F (260 C), power off; minimum installation temperature -76 F (-60 C).
- Single overlap allowed per zone; cable can be cut to length and terminated on site, using an inactive zone 12 in (30 cm) from the last node.
- Nonhazardous and hazardous locations; T-class by stabilised design with TraceCalc Pro.
- Voltage groups for 120, 240 and 480 V; 480 V circuits need Elexant 4020i, 920, NGC-30 or NGC-40 controllers.

Selecting a VPL code
Twelve codes cover four power classes and three voltage groups: 5VPL1-CT 587458-000, 10VPL1-CT 276822-000, 15VPL1-CT 181162-000, 20VPL1-CT 005614-000; 5VPL2-CT 451828-000, 10VPL2-CT 892652-000, 15VPL2-CT 068380-000, 20VPL2-CT 589252-000; and the 480 V 5VPL4-CT P000000678, 10VPL4-CT P000000679, 15VPL4-CT P000000680, 20VPL4-CT P000000681. The 20 W 240 V code is limited to 200-240 Vac.
The maximum continuous maintain table falls with output class: at 240 V the 5 W code can maintain 445 F (230 C) while the 15 W code is limited to 335 F (170 C), so the heat-loss calculation sets the class.
Installation notes specific to power-limiting cable
Manual H57274 sets the VPL minimum bend radius at three quarters of an inch, allows only a single overlap per zone, and says to cut the cable 12 in (30 cm) from the last active node (indentation) so an inactive zone enters the component. Cables are taped on with glass tape and finished with Raychem kits; the manual shows the cable on valves, flanges, pumps and supports with loops.
Ground-fault protection is required on every branch; 480 V VPL must use controllers that give ground-fault protection at 480 V. Test at 500, 1000 and 2500 Vdc before and after insulation.
Where power-limiting cable is chosen
General engineering note: VPL is picked where self-regulating cables cannot reach the required output or temperature, for example steam-purged lines, heavy products and long runs where a 480 V circuit reduces the number of power points. The Gulf refinery and terminal market uses such cables for loading lines and process piping.
The datasheet is clear that VPL cannot be cut and spliced without the inactive-zone rule, so installers should be trained on the manual before work.
Information to send with an RFQ for the Raychem 10VPL2-CT Power-Limiting Heating Cable
Heat-tracing cable is quoted per metre or per reel, but the cable alone rarely completes a circuit. To get an accurate offer for the Raychem 10VPL2-CT Power-Limiting Heating Cable, list the pipe sizes and lengths to be traced, the maintain temperature, the lowest expected ambient temperature and the highest exposure temperature during steam-out or process upsets. State the supply voltage, the breaker rating you plan to use and whether the area is classified, with the gas group and temperature class required.
- Total cable length, with an allowance for valves, flanges, pumps and supports.
- Connection kits: power connection, splice, tee and end seal, plus attachment tape and labels.
- Thermal insulation type and thickness, because heat loss drives the watts per metre needed.
- Control method: ambient sensing, line sensing or an electronic controller with monitoring.
With this data the circuit can be checked against the maximum circuit lengths in the manufacturer’s design tables before the order is placed, which avoids nuisance breaker trips during cold start-up.
