Pfannenberg PTF 60.500 Roof-Mounted Filterfan, up to 1000 m³/h

Description

Roof-mounted filterfans for high-flow cabinet cooling

The Pfannenberg PTF 60.500 is the smallest of three roof-mounted filterfans, PTF 60.500, PTF 60.700 and PTF 61.000, that sit on top of an enclosure and draw cabinet air out through the roof. Free air flow runs from 350 to 1000 m³/h across the range in two installation sizes, and the units come in IP 54 with a filter mat or in IP 33 without one. A top exhaust filter, PTFA 60.000, completes the arrangement.

Natural convection helps: warm air rises to the roof, and the roof fan removes it from the hottest zone of the cabinet. The sheet cites optimum air passage and even temperature distribution, toolless mounting by a patented quick-fastening system and UL and cUL approval.

Using roof filterfans in a cabinet

A roof-mounted fan works as an extraction unit. Its air supply must enter lower down, through a filter or louvre on the door or side, so give the intake at least the free area needed for the stated flow, and do not place the inlet near a heat source or inside a path that short-circuits to the roof opening. The IP 33 version has no filter mat and suits clean, dry indoor rooms with only a drip-water risk, while the IP 54 version with the filter mat suits workshop and plant conditions. Spare mats are listed in packs of 20 (18611600124 and 18611600143), with a thermostat (17121000000) and a hygrostat (17207000000) as control accessories.

Selection and what to confirm before ordering

Select the size from the heat loss and the permitted temperature rise, using the in-combination air flow. Confirm the voltage, the IP class and the thermostat, and verify the filterfan can be installed in the available roof area. If the required inside temperature is below the ambient temperature, a filterfan cannot achieve it and a cooling unit should be selected instead; the manufacturer also supplies top-mounted cooling units such as the DTT range. Key features of the PTF 60.500

  • Roof position extracts air from the warmest layer of the enclosure, working with natural convection rather than against it.
  • Free air flow of 350 m³/h (IP 54) or 500 m³/h (IP 33), falling to 242 m³/h and 310 m³/h when combined with the exhaust filter.
  • Ball-bearing fan rated for 100 % duty cycle, suitable for continuous operation in panels that run around the clock.
  • Toolless mounting by the patented quick-fastening system, which shortens fitting time on site.
  • Housing of powder-coated sheet steel with a self-extinguishing ABS-FR thermoplastic snap-in part to UL 94 V-0, in RAL 7035 to match most standard enclosures.
  • UL and cUL approval, useful where the panel builder has to document component listings.

Choosing between the IP 54 and IP 33 versions

The two protection classes trade air flow against ingress protection. The IP 33 unit moves more air because there is no filter mat restricting it, but it only resists dripping water and offers no dust filtration. The IP 54 unit carries a G4 filter mat to EN 779 with a stated efficiency of 81 %, which keeps most airborne dust out of the enclosure at the cost of a lower free air flow. For most industrial sites the IP 54 version is the practical choice; IP 33 belongs in clean switch rooms or air-conditioned control buildings.

Estimating the air flow you need

A filterfan can only cool a cabinet towards the surrounding air temperature, so the calculation starts from the internal heat loss of the installed equipment and the temperature difference you can accept between inside and outside. The larger the permitted rise, the less air is needed. Always size against the air flow figure for the complete combination, fan plus exhaust filter, rather than the free air flow of the fan alone, because the exhaust filter adds resistance. Where the heat load is close to the limit of the PTF 60.500, the PTF 60.700 in the same family gives more margin before a move to a cooling unit becomes necessary.

Installation and maintenance

  • Cut the roof opening to the template in the product sheet and check that the roof sheet is stiff enough to carry 4.8 kg without flexing.
  • Wire the 230 V or 115 V supply to the terminal strip and protect it with the 6 A fuse stated by the manufacturer.
  • Fit the optional thermostat so that the fan runs only when the internal temperature calls for it; this extends filter and bearing life.
  • Place the inlet filter low on the door or side wall, away from the roof unit, so that cool air sweeps across the components before leaving.
  • Inspect the filter mats on a fixed schedule and replace them when they are visibly loaded; a blocked mat reduces air flow sharply and the cabinet temperature climbs without any alarm.

Operating in Oman and GCC conditions

The stated operating range of −15 to +55 °C covers most indoor and sheltered outdoor sites in the region, but summer ambient temperatures in the interior of Oman and in exposed industrial yards can approach that upper limit. Because a filterfan cannot cool below ambient, panels that must stay well under the outside temperature in summer need a cooling unit instead. Fine desert dust loads filter mats quickly, so stock spare mats and shorten the inspection interval during shamal and dust-storm seasons. In coastal plants with salt-laden air, keep the roof unit out of direct spray and check gaskets and fixings during routine maintenance.

What to include in your RFQ

  • Model and protection class: PTF 60.500 in IP 54 or IP 33.
  • Supply voltage, 230 V or 115 V, so the correct article number is quoted.
  • Whether the PTFA 60.000 exhaust filter, thermostat or hygrostat are required.
  • Number of spare filter mat packs.
  • Enclosure dimensions, internal heat loss and maximum ambient temperature, if you want the selection reviewed.
  • Quantity and delivery location.

About brand

Pfannenberg is a family-owned German company based in Hamburg that makes signalling devices and thermal management products for industrial use. Otto Pfannenberg founded the company in 1954, and its history includes the invention of the filter fan in 1958 and of the electronic flashing beacon in 1962.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Pfannenberg signalling devices and enclosure climate products for panel builders and plant engineers in Oman and the GCC.

Pfannenberg product series

Signalling devices include the PATROL PA X combined flashing sounders from 105 to 122 dB(A), the PYRA flashing light sounder, the PRO 10-Ex sounder for zone 2 and zone 22, and the INTENSE BR 50 modular LED signal tower.

Thermal management covers FLZ enclosure thermostats, twin thermostats, hygrostats and Peltier thermostats, FLH radiant heaters and PFH and FLH-T fan heaters, PF filter fans in several installation sizes up to 785 m3/h and the PTF roof-mounted filter fan, and DTS and DTI cooling units, including the DTI outdoor version.

Where Pfannenberg products are used

Control and drive cabinets on machines and in plant rooms, outdoor enclosures in hot and humid climates, and alarm and evacuation signalling in industrial buildings and process areas. In the Gulf, cabinet cooling and condensation control are the main reasons for specifying Pfannenberg thermal products.

Ordering Pfannenberg products: what we need

Send the article number or full designation, such as PA X 1-05 or DTI 8401P. For signalling devices add the supply voltage, lens and housing colour and any required approval such as EN 54-3 or an Ex certificate. For cooling units give the cooling capacity, voltage and frequency, mounting (side or roof, internal or external) and the ambient temperature.
