Pfannenberg CWB-ATEX Flashing Light 5 J Zone 1 and 21
Description
CWB-ATEX 5 J flashing light for Zone 1, 2, 21 and 22
The CWB-ATEX is a compact explosion-protected xenon flashing light from Pfannenberg that serves as a visual alarm in Zones 1, 2, 21 and 22. It delivers 5 J of flash energy at about 1 Hz from a tall slim housing in stainless steel and aluminium, and carries a DNV approval mark in the product sheet. Seven Star LLC supplies the CWB-ATEX in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat; this page explains the data an RFQ needs.
Construction and protection concept of the CWB-ATEX
The CWB-ATEX combines two protection types. The light housing is flameproof “d”, and the terminal box is enhanced safety “e”, giving the marking II 2G Ex db eb IIC T6 Gb at ambient up to 40 °C and T5 up to 50 °C, plus II 2D Ex db IIIC T85 °C Db and T100 °C Db for dust. The certificate of conformity is EPS 20 ATEX 1 222 X, issued by Bureau Veritas. The housing is stainless steel with an aluminium base in yellow and a black plinth, and the lens is polycarbonate.

How the CWB-ATEX flashes and what limits the installation
A xenon tube flashes behind the polycarbonate lens. The light source keeps 70 % of its emission after 8,000,000 flashes. Because the light must stay upright, the unit can be mounted on walls, posts or pipes with the manufacturer’s brackets, but not hung from a ceiling. Accessories shown by the manufacturer include a protective cage, a mounting plate, a standard fixing bracket and a pipe clamp.
Where the CWB-ATEX fits and related Pfannenberg Ex lights
The CWB-ATEX is the slim 5 J option in the Zone 1 range. The BExBG05, BExBG10 and BExBG15 offer 5, 10 and 15 J in aluminium housings, and the Quadro F12-3G/3D ATEX covers Zone 2 and 22 with 7.5 J. For intrinsically safe loops the IS-mB1 LED light is the manufacturer’s choice. Choose the CWB-ATEX when a tall, small-footprint beacon with an enhanced-safety terminal box is wanted.
Selection and ordering checklist for the CWB-ATEX
- Zone and gas or dust group; confirm IIC and IIIC are acceptable for the site.
- Supply voltage group, since the CWB-ATEX is built for several ranges.
- Lens colour and whether the protective cage, bracket or pipe clamp is needed.
- Mounting orientation: upright only.
- Maximum ambient temperature, to confirm T6 or T5 application.
- Cable and gland: a chrome-plated M20 gland for 6 to 13 mm cable is supplied.
Installation and maintenance of the CWB-ATEX
Mount on the wall, floor or bracket with M6 fixings using the dimensions in the sheet, wire to the screw terminals within the stated cross-sections and close the housing correctly so IP 66 and the Ex protection remain valid. Observe the manual provided in English, German and French. In service, inspect gaskets, the lens and the cage, keep dirt off the lens and test flashing as part of alarm checks.
Typical applications of the CWB-ATEX in Oman and the GCC
The stainless steel housing and DNV listing make the CWB-ATEX suitable for offshore decks, marine terminals, petrochemical units, gas processing plants and tank farms where a small but visible alarm lamp is required. In hot Gulf conditions check the +55 °C operating limit and the T5 limit of +50 °C against solar-heated surfaces.
Planning alarm layouts with the CWB-ATEX
When a CWB-ATEX is placed in an alarm scheme, the first question is visibility. At 55 cd and 5 J the unit is a local-area beacon, so it is normally positioned at eye height near access points, at the end of walkways or beside equipment that requires a warning. Several units can be added where sight lines are blocked by pipe racks or vessels. Keep the unit upright and clear of heat sources, record the temperature class of each location, and label the circuit so maintenance staff know the supply group that was ordered. A spare complete unit is often stocked because the voltage group cannot be changed on site, and a protective cage should be chosen where vehicles or scaffolding movements are expected nearby.
Documentation matters for hazardous-area audits. Keep the certificate reference, the product sheet and the installation manual with the loop file, and note the gland and stopping plug used. These records make periodic inspection under the site Ex management system straightforward.

About brand
Pfannenberg is the German maker of thermal management and signalling products for electrical enclosures and industry: filter fans, cooling units, air-to-water heat exchangers, chillers, heaters, sirens and beacons. Otto Pfannenberg, an electrical engineer, founded the company in Hamburg in 1954, and in 1958 he invented the filter fan to stop components in control cabinets from overheating. Pfannenberg is still family-owned and headquartered in Hamburg.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Pfannenberg signalling devices and enclosure climate products for panel builders and plant engineers in Oman and the GCC.
