Janitza UMG 512-PRO Class A Power Quality Analyser
Description
UMG 512-PRO Class A power quality analyser for 50/60 Hz networks
The Janitza UMG 512-PRO is a panel-mounted power quality analyser and energy meter built for permanent monitoring of low, medium and high voltage networks through current and voltage transformers. It records the full set of Class A power quality parameters defined in IEC 61000-4-30, offers both Modbus and Profibus connectivity, and adds residual current and temperature inputs. Seven Star LLC supplies the UMG 512-PRO in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
The datasheet lists two supply versions: a 230 V option (95 to 240 V AC or 80 to 300 V DC) and a 24 V option (48 to 110 V AC or 24 to 150 V DC). Confirm which one your site needs before ordering, because the supply range is fixed by the variant.

How the UMG 512-PRO measures and records
The analyser samples every voltage and current channel at 25.6 kHz and evaluates the waveform continuously without gaps. From these samples it derives rms values, power, energy, frequency, harmonics, flicker, unbalance, dips, swells, short interruptions and transients. Events are timestamped and stored, so a trip, a voltage sag or a harmonic problem can be matched with the process event that caused it.
Besides the three phase channels, the UMG 512-PRO has an additional current input, so the neutral conductor can be measured directly rather than calculated. The residual current inputs let the same device watch earth-leakage trends, and the temperature input can supervise a transformer or busbar sensor. The Jasic programmable logic in the device can combine these inputs with the digital outputs for simple local alarming.
Where the UMG 512-PRO fits in a power system
Use it at the incomer of a main switchboard, on a generator or transformer feeder, or at the point of common coupling where compliance with grid power quality limits is checked. Data is read over Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP or Profibus into a SCADA, DCS or energy management system. The simpler UMG 512 on the same platform lacks the Pro-level data set, and the manufacturer offers other devices in the UMG range for sub-metering where Class A is not required.
Selecting and ordering the UMG 512-PRO
- Choose the correct auxiliary supply version: 230 V or 24 V option.
- Confirm the secondary current of the CTs; accuracy classes in the datasheet assume ../5 A, and ../1 A transformers give class 0.5/0.5S.
- Check the network voltage against the 600 V L-N and 1000 V L-L input limits; higher voltages need voltage transformers.
- Choose the fieldbus: RS485 Modbus, Profibus or Ethernet, and whether the BACnet option is wanted.
- Confirm panel cut-out of 138 x 138 mm and that the rear terminals (IP20) are protected inside the cabinet.
- Check whether residual current monitoring or temperature sensing will be used.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the UMG 512-PRO
The device must be mounted vertically in a weather-protected, fixed installation and connected to protective earth. The supply needs a 6 A type B fuse, and the voltage measuring inputs must be fused with 1 to 10 A. Current inputs must not be left open when a CT is loaded; short the CT secondary before working on the terminals. Terminal torque is 0.4 to 0.5 N·m for supply, voltage and current, and 0.2 to 0.25 N·m for the signal terminals.
After wiring, set the CT and VT ratios, the network type and communication settings, then compare the displayed phase values and power sign with a reference instrument. A lithium CR2450 battery backs the real-time clock, so plan to replace it at maintenance intervals, and keep a recent copy of the device configuration for spares swap-over.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
Gulf power systems combine heavy motor loads, variable speed drives and large compressors, all of which distort voltage and current. The UMG 512-PRO suits main substations of refineries, petrochemical plants, desalination sites and gas processing facilities, as well as data centres and commercial towers where energy cost and power quality both matter. Installed in air-conditioned switchrooms, it fits the -10 to +55°C operating range; outdoor kiosks in Oman summers should be checked for heat load and dust.

Janitza UMG 508 and the UMG series
The UMG 508 is a panel-mounted power analyzer with a color graphic display. It measures the electrical quantities of a three-phase system continuously, records harmonics up to the 40th order and supply events in its own memory, and passes data to energy management or SCADA software over Ethernet and RS485. Modbus and Profibus DP are among its protocols, and Janitza GridVis software is used to set it up and read it out.

Ordering Janitza devices: what we need
Give the Janitza item number or the full type from the rating label, since one UMG model can be made in more than one supply voltage version. Add the auxiliary voltage in the panel, the measured system voltage, current transformer secondary (1 A or 5 A), the protocol your software uses, and any current transformers or residual current sensors to be quoted with it.
