Iskra WM3-6 Three-Phase Energy Meter 65 A, MID Option

Description

WM3-6 is the Iskra three-phase, direct-connected DIN-rail energy meter with a 65 A maximum current. The WM3M6 is the MID-certified version of the same family. Each meter takes one optional function module: RS485 Modbus, M-Bus, tariff input or pulse output.

A 65 A three-phase meter configured by one plug-in function

The meter uses fast sampling of voltage and current to calculate active, reactive and apparent power and energy per phase and in total, voltage, current, phase-to-phase voltage and angle, frequency, power factor, power angle and THD. Active energy is class 1 (EN 62053-21) and class B under EN 50470-3 for the MID type, with class 2 reactive energy.

The housing has only two auxiliary terminals, so only one extension can be fitted. The side IR port is standard and works with the WM-USB adapter (one DIN module wide), which lets a technician change settings from a PC without any communication module installed. The manual lists four resettable and four non-resettable energy counters, which can be viewed on the 7+1 digit LCD.

Features stated in the data sheet

  • Bidirectional energy measurement (import/export) and 65 A maximum current.
  • MID approval for the WM3M6 version; approval applies to non-resettable active energy counters.
  • Display with 7+1 digits (100 Wh resolution), red LED at 1000 imp/kWh, sealable terminal cover.
  • Option modules: RS485 Modbus, M-Bus, two-tariff input or pulse output.
  • 3 DIN modules wide, mounting to EN 60715.

Article numbers

Eight article numbers are printed: 022433920001 to 022433920004 are WM3-6 230 with pulse output (PB), tariff input (TB), RS485 (DB) or M-Bus (LB); 022433920101 to 022433920104 are the MID WM3M6 230 with the same modules. All are 65 A, IR, bidirectional and 3 modules wide.

Pick the module by how the meter will be read: pulses for a counter, a tariff signal for dual-rate metering, RS485 for PLC or SCADA, M-Bus for utility-style reading.

Installation notes

Connection must be done by qualified staff with the supply off; a neutral wire has to be connected. For the optional modules the manual recommends putting a ferrite bead (two turns) on the RS485 line to reduce radiated emission.

Main inputs take 1.5 to 25 mm2 conductors with M5 screws; module terminals 1 to 2.5 mm2 with M3 screws at 0.7 to 0.8 Nm. In a damp or dusty enclosure, fit the meter in a cabinet, because the housing rating is IP50 and IP51 is reached only inside an appropriate cabinet.

Typical applications

General engineering note: 65 A direct metering covers sub-boards for workshops, camps, offices and small plant. MID versions are used where the reading is used for billing. The standard IR port with the WM-USB adapter allows quick checking of settings on site.

Sub-metering in Oman and the GCC

Three-phase direct-connected meters up to 65 A are a practical choice in the region for metering tenants and plant in commercial and industrial buildings, such as HVAC units, chillers, pumps, workshops and small production lines. Because each meter takes one plug-in function module, the same base meter can be used with Modbus in a building management system, M-Bus in a utility-style reading network, or a simple pulse output to an existing data logger. Choose the module to match the system that will read the meter.

Oman’s networks run at 50 Hz. Panels in plant rooms can run hot in summer, so check the internal panel temperature against the meter rating, and leave space for ventilation. Where readings are used for billing, confirm with the local authority which approvals apply.

About brand

Iskra is a Slovenian electrical and electronics company from Kranj, whose name, meaning spark, was given to the former Kranj machine works in 1946. Its measurement range covers power quality analysers, multifunction meters and MID energy meters. After Yugoslavia broke up, Iskra's businesses were split into separate companies; the utility electricity meter maker Iskraemeco is one of them.
