Enerdis ULYS MCM Multi-Channel Energy Meter
Overview
The Enerdis ULYS MCM is a multi-channel electricity meter that centralises the measurement of many electrical feeders in a single compact DIN-rail product. In its largest version it replaces up to 18 three-phase meters, or up to 54 single-phase meters, while occupying roughly the space of two conventional meters. Developed in France within the Enerdis metering range, now marketed by Chauvin Arnoux Energy, the Enerdis ULYS MCM was created for engineers who must add sub-metering to crowded switchboards and motor control centres, where installing one meter per outgoing feeder would require a new enclosure, extra wiring and considerable downtime.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Enerdis ULYS MCM, its remote display and its current sensor kits to contractors, facility owners and industrial plants in the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. As a trusted supplier with engineering support in Muscat, we help energy managers size the number of channels and choose the right sensor for each feeder, so that tenant billing, energy audits and ISO 50001 programmes start with reliable data.
Measurement Principle of the Enerdis ULYS MCM
The Enerdis ULYS MCM bases its operation on a single voltage measurement shared by all feeders. One set of voltage inputs is wired to the busbar, accepting 43 to 690 V between phases or 25 to 400 V phase-to-neutral at 45 to 65 Hz, in 1P2W, 3P3W or 3P4W systems. Each feeder then only needs current sensors. These deliver a low-level 0 to 333 mV signal into a 20 kΩ input, rather than a 1 A or 5 A secondary current, and connect to the meter through RJ12 quick connectors. Combining the shared voltage with each feeder’s current, the meter computes V, U, I, frequency, power factor, unbalance, active, reactive, apparent and distortion power and the corresponding energies.
Because the sensors output a voltage signal, there is no dangerous open-circuit secondary as with conventional current transformers, so no shorting device is needed to secure the installation. Accuracy is class 0.5 for active power and active energy according to IEC 61557-12 and IEC 62053-22, 0.2 for current and 0.1 for voltage. More than 2,000 variables become available across all channels, and an NTC probe input measures temperature at the panel.
Engineering Design of the Enerdis ULYS MCM
The housing of the Enerdis ULYS MCM measures 156 × 90 × 61 mm, is rated IP20 for indoor use, and mounts on DIN rail inside the cabinet. The front carries 18 RJ12 ports for current sensors, status LEDs, the voltage input terminal, auxiliary supply terminals for 100 to 240 Vac, one on-off input, one normally open SPST on-off output rated 250 Vac / 5 A, and a micro-SD card slot. Communication is built in: an Ethernet port with Modbus TCP at 10/100 Mbit/s and an RS485 port with Modbus for a PLC or SCADA, plus an RS232 port for a PC or the remote screen. One single model therefore covers both field bus situations.
Current sensing uses clip-on accessories that can be installed without disconnecting conductors: five split-core 333 mV current transformer models for low and medium current feeders and two MiniFlex flexible Rogowski coil models for high currents or multiple conductors on main feeders. Sensors are supplied in kits of three and can differ from one feeder to another. The optional ULYS MCM D remote display, with a round barrel for door mounting, connects by RJ45 cable, needs no separate power wiring and shows the data of all channels grouped by feeder or by quantity.
Key Features
Engineers select the Enerdis ULYS MCM for the following reasons:
- Up to 18 three-phase or 54 single-phase metering channels in one compact DIN-rail unit.
- Versions with 6, 9, 15 or 18 three-phase channels to match the size of the switchboard.
- RJ12 plug-in sensor connections that reduce wiring time and the risk of cabling errors.
- Low-voltage 333 mV sensor technology that removes the need for CT shorting blocks.
- Compatibility with split-core current transformers and MiniFlex Rogowski coils on the same meter.
- Class 0.5 active energy and comprehensive measurement of all electrical quantities per feeder.
- Modbus TCP over Ethernet and Modbus RS485 available on every unit, plus RS232 for configuration.
- ULYS MCM Utility software for configuration, real-time display and historical graphs of each feeder.
Industrial Applications
Typical uses of the Enerdis ULYS MCM include sub-metering of lighting, HVAC, pumps and small power circuits in commercial towers, hospitals, hotels and shopping centres; allocation of energy costs to production lines or tenants in industrial estates; and retrofitting existing low voltage distribution boards where there is no space for additional individual meters. Data centres use the Enerdis ULYS MCM to monitor many outgoing circuits, and utilities and facility managers use the data to identify consumption anomalies and verify savings after efficiency projects.
In Oman, the Enerdis ULYS MCM suits mixed-use developments and government buildings in Muscat, hospitality projects along the coast, and industrial facilities in the Sohar, Duqm and Salalah zones where energy cost allocation between process units is required. Seven Star LLC works with consultants and panel builders as a trusted supplier, offering engineering support in Muscat. Where a feeder also needs high-accuracy power quality analysis, the multi-channel meter can be combined with a dedicated monitor, and where analogue outputs are needed the Enerdis TRIAD2 T304 transducer is a useful complement.
