Brand:

Janitza UMG 604-PRO Power Quality Analyser

Description

The Janitza UMG 604-PRO is a DIN-rail power quality analyser for three-phase networks up to 480 V line-to-line. It measures voltage, current, power and energy, analyses harmonics up to the 40th, and records transients longer than 50 µs, which makes it a practical choice for permanent monitoring of industrial feeders, switchgear and generator or UPS outputs.

Power quality recording on a six-module DIN-rail housing

The 604-PRO takes four voltage and four current inputs and samples at 20 kHz per phase. Janitza lists harmonics analysis, unbalance and THD-U/THD-I, positive, negative and zero sequence components, short-term interruptions above 20 ms, transient logging, start-up process and fault recorder functions, and a rotary field indication. Internal memory is 128 MB, and the device has two digital inputs and two digital/pulse outputs, plus a PT100/PT1000/KTY83/KTY84 temperature input.

Communication is by RS485, RS232 and Ethernet. The Ethernet port provides a Modbus gateway and an embedded web server, and the protocol list includes Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, BACnet, SNMP, NTP, SMTP and FTP, so the device can feed a SCADA or building-management system and e-mail alarms. The Jasic programming option allows custom logic with 200 ms response time. The UMG 604-PRO is UL certified and the active-energy class is 0.5S with ../5 A transformers.

Planning the installation

The 604-PRO measures 5 A secondary current directly, so most installations use current transformers with 5 A or 1 A secondaries and set the ratio in the device. Check the nominal voltage against the supply option on the nameplate, fuse the supply with a 6 A type B breaker as the datasheet requires, and fit voltage-measurement fuses of 1 to 10 A. For a simpler energy meter see the Janitza 96RM below, or compare with the published Janitza UMG 508 universal measuring device. More devices are listed under controllers and data acquisition.

How the Janitza UMG 604-PRO works

The UMG 604-PRO takes four voltage inputs and four current inputs from the network. It samples each phase at 20 kHz and turns the values into rms voltage, current, power, energy and harmonics up to the 40th. It also watches for sags, interruptions longer than 20 ms and transients longer than 50 microseconds, and it stores them in 128 MB of memory. Values are passed on by RS485, RS232 or Ethernet, using Modbus, BACnet and SNMP among others. The device can also act as a Modbus gateway.

Where the Janitza UMG 604-PRO is used

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the UMG 604-PRO

Snap the device onto the DIN rail in a panel. Wire the voltage inputs through fuses and the current inputs through transformers, keeping the polarity right. Connect the supply that matches the option on the label. Set the transformer ratios and the network type in the menu or in the software, and check the rotary field indication. Back up the settings and recorded data on a schedule.

About brand

Energy managers and electrical engineers know Janitza for the UMG series of measuring devices found in main distribution boards and substations. The German company, founded in 1986 and based in Lahnau, concentrates on energy measurement and power quality monitoring. Seven Star LLC lists the Janitza UMG 508 and supplies Janitza power quality analyzers and their accessories to plants and building operators in Oman and the GCC.

Janitza UMG 508 and the UMG series

The UMG 508 is a panel-mounted power analyzer with a color graphic display. It measures the electrical quantities of a three-phase system continuously, records harmonics up to the 40th order and supply events in its own memory, and passes data to energy management or SCADA software over Ethernet and RS485. Modbus and Profibus DP are among its protocols, and Janitza GridVis software is used to set it up and read it out.

Ordering Janitza devices: what we need

Give the Janitza item number or the full type from the rating label, since one UMG model can be made in more than one supply voltage version. Add the auxiliary voltage in the panel, the measured system voltage, current transformer secondary (1 A or 5 A), the protocol your software uses, and any current transformers or residual current sensors to be quoted with it.
