OBO 5095314 V20-4+FS-550 Surge Arrester Type 2 4-Pole

Description

5095314 is the OBO Bettermann SurgeController V20-4+FS-550: a four-pole type 2 (class II) surge arrester for 480 V nominal AC networks with a maximum continuous voltage of 550 V, a maximum discharge current of 40 kA (8/20 us) per pole and a potential-free changeover contact for remote signalling. It mounts on 35 mm DIN rail and is four division units wide.

Type 2 surge protection for main and sub-distribution boards

OBO describes the V20 as a type 2 surge arrester for equipotential bonding to VDE 0100-443 (IEC 60364-4-44), with high-performance varistors giving a discharge capacity up to 40 kA (8/20) per pole and 160 kA total. The modular arrester has a cut-off unit, a visual status display and a locking mechanism with vibration protection and voltage keying. Application given by OBO: equipotential bonding in main and sub-distributions.

The 550 V version suits 480 V nominal AC systems in TN-S and TN-C-S network forms; the datasheet lists the protection level as 2.4 kV or less (L-N), residual voltage 1.7 kV at 1 kA and 2.1 kV at 5 kA, response time below 25 ns, and a short-circuit resistance of 50 kA rms with a maximum back-up fuse of 160 A gL/gG. The housing is polyamide to UL 94 V-0.

Selection and ordering guide

Use the 550 V four-pole version for TN-S or TN-C-S systems rated 480 V nominal. The OBO V20 family also includes 2-pole (5095312) and 3+1 versions at other voltages, and -FS indicates the remote-signalling variant.

Surge arresters are upstream protective devices; coordinate with a type 1 lightning-current arrester at the building entry where a structure has an external lightning protection system, and with type 3 devices at sensitive equipment. The back-up fuse must not exceed 160 A gL/gG.

Installation and operation notes

Install in the distribution board on 35 mm DIN rail with connection leads as short as possible (general surge protection practice); torque main terminals to 4 Nm and the signalling terminals to 0.2 Nm.

The arrester is for indoor installation, IP20, so it must sit inside an enclosure; use the visual display to check status and wire the changeover contact to a PLC or BMS for remote status monitoring.

Reading the type code: V20-4+FS-550 means V20 (family), 4 (four poles), +FS (with remote-signalling contact) and 550 (maximum continuous voltage in volts). The visual status display and the changeover contact allow a maintenance team to see a spent module from the front of the board and a control system to log the event, which shortens the time between a surge event and replacement.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

Industrial plants, offices, hospitals, data centres and utilities with 400/480 V distribution. Switching operations and grid faults, not only lightning, are common sources of surges that such arresters are installed to limit.

The wide temperature range (-40 to +80 C) and 5-95 % humidity rating cover most indoor switchroom conditions; check rooms without air-conditioning against the +80 C limit.

Installation and selection notes

Fit the V20-4+FS-550 on a 35 mm DIN rail in the main or sub-distribution board as close as practical to the incoming supply, keep the connecting conductors short, and coordinate the backup fuse with the value in the data sheet. The potential-free changeover contact can be wired to a building management or alarm system to signal a defective module. Replace modules when the status display shows a fault, and record the date in the maintenance log.
