CMP Zenith 2BCAL Two Bolt Aluminium Cable Cleat

Description

Overview

The CMP Zenith (type 2BCAL) is a two bolt metallic cable cleat for securing a single cable, whether a single-core conductor or a large multicore power cable, to a ladder, tray, strut or steel structure. It is made from high pressure die cast LM20 aluminium and has been designed, constructed and tested in accordance with IEC 61914, the international standard for cable cleats in electrical installations. The CMP Zenith retains the cable without damaging or deforming it, holds it against axial and lateral movement in normal service, and keeps it in place when the electromagnetic forces of a short circuit try to throw it off its support.

Seven Star LLC supplies the CMP Zenith to electrical contractors, substation builders and plant owners in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Cable cleats are often treated as a commodity until a fault occurs, and the cost of re-pulling damaged power cables after a short circuit is far higher than the cost of cleats that were tested for the fault level of the installation in the first place.

Working Principle

When a fault current flows in a power cable, the magnetic field around each conductor creates large forces between conductors and between the cable and nearby steelwork. Unrestrained or poorly restrained cables can whip, tear their supports and damage their sheaths, which turns an electrical fault into a fire and safety hazard. IEC 61914 defines short-circuit tests in which the cleat must keep the cable in position and remain fit for purpose. The CMP Zenith data sheet records these results: in multicore formation, 102 kA peak (48.6 kA r.m.s.) for 0.1 s, both for one and for two short circuits at 600 mm cleat centres; in parallel formation at 105 mm cable centres, 130 kA peak (59.0 kA r.m.s.) for one and 120 kA peak (54.5 kA r.m.s.) for two short circuits of 0.1 s, plus 81 kA peak and 71 kA peak for 1 s tests.

In normal operation, the cleat must also resist the cable sliding through it during thermal cycling or on vertical runs. The internal twin arc profile of the CMP Zenith, which CMP describes as patent pending, grips the sheath over two arcs rather than at single points, which limits both axial and lateral movement while spreading the clamping pressure. Tested values are 18 to 32 kN lateral load and 8 kN axial load, and the cleat passes the IEC 61914 very heavy impact test.

Engineering Design of the CMP Zenith

Each CMP Zenith consists of two die cast aluminium halves clamped together by two bolts. The base carries two M12 clearance holes, so the installer can fix it with either M10 or M12 fasteners, and the cleat can be double stacked. Aluminium is light, non-magnetic and corrosion resistant, and the cleat is UV and weather resistant for outdoor runs. The permanent application temperature is -60 °C to +150 °C, and the material passes the IEC 61914 needle flame test.

The range take is wide: nine sizes cover cable diameters from 38 mm to 151 mm, with weights from 250 g to 768 g. Epoxy (EC), polyester (PC) or thermoplastic (TC) coatings can be added by suffix, for example 2BC038048AEC. Fixing fasteners and isolation or separation pads, which prevent galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals, are not included as standard but can be supplied by CMP on request.

Key Features

The CMP Zenith offers the following practical benefits on site:

  • Third-party certification to IEC 61914 for metallic cable cleats.
  • High pressure die cast aluminium construction, light and suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
  • Twin arc internal profile for strong axial and lateral retention without deforming the cable.
  • Tested short-circuit withstand up to 130 kA peak in parallel formation.
  • Operating temperature range of -60 °C to +150 °C, sunlight (UV) and weather resistant.
  • Nine sizes covering 38 to 151 mm cable diameter, reducing the number of stock codes.
  • Two bolt fixing design accepting M10 or M12 fasteners, and can be double stacked.
  • Optional epoxy, polyester or thermoplastic coatings for aggressive atmospheres.

Industrial Applications

The CMP Zenith is used on LV and MV power cable runs where a single cable must be fixed securely: transformer and generator feeders, switchgear incomers, large motor feeders, solar and wind collector cables, data centre power runs and building risers. In oil and gas plants it restrains armoured power cables on ladder racks between substations, process units and large drives, alongside terminations made with CMP glands and connected equipment such as the Siemens SINAMICS G120C drive or the SEL-751 feeder protection relay that protects the circuit.

In Oman, the CMP Zenith suits power and water plants, grid substations, industrial estates in Sohar, Rusayl and Duqm, and the long outdoor cable runs typical of oil and gas concessions, where UV resistance and a wide temperature rating matter. Seven Star LLC supplies the CMP Zenith together with fixing packs and isolation pads where needed, and our Muscat team can help select the size and spacing from the cable diameter and prospective fault level. Cable entries at the equipment end can be completed with glands such as the Hawke 501/421 industrial cable gland.

About brand
CMP Products makes cable glands and cable cleats, and little else. Founded in 1957 and based in Cramlington, United Kingdom, the company is a name that appears on hazardous-area cable schedules for oil, gas and power projects. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies CMP cable glands for explosive atmospheres to contractors in Oman, including the E1FW and the Triton T3CDS listed on this page.

CMP cable glands listed here

The T3CDS Triton is a gland for armored cables with a compensating displacement seal, a design that sets the inner seal correctly across the cable diameter range, and an integral deluge seal. CMP lists it as Ex db, Ex eb, Ex nR and Ex ta, with IP66, IP67 and IP68 ratings. The E1FW is the explosive atmosphere gland for steel wire armored (SWA) and aluminum wire armored (AWA) cable.

Ordering CMP glands: what we need

A gland is sized to the cable, so send the cable type and three dimensions: inner bedding diameter, outer sheath diameter and armor wire size. Add the entry thread and size (metric or NPT), the gland material (brass, nickel-plated brass or stainless steel) and accessories such as locknut, earth tag, sealing washer and shroud. GCC project specifications usually name the certificate required.
