Pepperl+Fuchs KFD0-RSH-1.4S.PS2 SIL 3 Relay Module

Description

KFD0-RSH-1.4S.PS2 SIL 3 fail-safe relay module for safety outputs

The KFD0-RSH-1.4S.PS2 is a one-channel relay module that lets a 24 V DC safety output of a control system switch a load circuit up to 230 V. It isolates the control side from the load, and it has two relay outputs of diverse design that can be used for energized-to-safe, de-energized-to-safe or dual-pole switching.

The datasheet names Yokogawa ProSafe DO cards SDV531 and SDV541 and the Honeywell DO card SDO-0824 as compatible controls; other ESD or DCS systems have to be checked with the manufacturer. In the part number, KFD0 is the loop-powered family, RSH marks the safety relay module and PS2 the version for the listed safety output cards.

Seven Star LLC supplies this module in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

How the KFD0-RSH-1.4S.PS2 provides safe switching

The module has two relays of diverse design, meaning different construction, acting on the same load circuit. In energized-to-safe use, output I switches the load on only when the safety card energizes the input; in de-energized-to-safe use, output II lets the load run until the input drops. A dual-pole arrangement opens both the supply and the return conductor.

Test pulses from the safety output card are tolerated, so the diagnostic pulses used by many safety cards do not trip the relay. The test terminals let maintenance verify that each relay still opens and closes as expected.

System fit and related parts

The KFD0-RSH-1.4S.PS2 is typically used between an ESD system and valves, motor starters or horns. It is a different product from the KFD2-SR2-Ex1.W or KFD2-ST3-Ex2, which are intrinsically safe isolators for sensors. For simple non-safety relay duty, the KFD2-EB-type modules or other switch amplifiers are enough.

Selection and ordering checklist for the KFD0-RSH-1.4S.PS2

  • Control card model and its test pulse behavior.
  • Load voltage and current within 5 A and the fuse rating.
  • Which safe state is needed: energized-to-safe or de-energized-to-safe.
  • Single or dual pole switching.
  • SIL calculation inputs from the functional safety manual.
  • Rail space of 20 mm.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the KFD0-RSH-1.4S.PS2

Wire input terminals 7 and 8 to the safety output, the load to terminals 2 and 3 or 4, 5 and 6 according to the chosen function, and use terminals 10 to 12 for the test routine. Use the safety manual for proof test intervals and failure data.

Check the fuse before use and do not exceed 80 % of its rating. After any load fault, replace the fuse and check the contact before returning the loop to service.

Safety loop practice with the KFD0-RSH-1.4S.PS2

A safety loop is only as reliable as its weakest component, so include the relay module in the PFD calculation with the data of the safety manual. Proof test the relay on the schedule of the safety requirement specification, using the test terminals where possible.

Keep field wiring and control wiring physically separated to preserve the isolation rating, and mark the module as a safety component on the cabinet drawing.

Before first start-up, simulate a safety trip from the control system and confirm with a meter that both relay outputs open or close as the chosen function requires. Document the result in the safety loop test record, together with the fuse rating installed and the load that is connected.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

The KFD0-RSH-1.4S.PS2 fits shutdown valves, burner management, emergency stop and fire and gas final elements at oil and gas facilities, power plants and petrochemical sites in Oman and the GCC, where the safety card cannot switch 230 V loads directly.

About brand

Pepperl+Fuchs is a German manufacturer of industrial sensors and explosion protection equipment, founded in 1945 in Mannheim by Walter Pepperl and Ludwig Fuchs as a radio repair shop. Defective transformers led them into manufacturing, and the company developed its first proximity switch in the late 1950s. Pepperl+Fuchs is headquartered in Mannheim and is a pioneer of intrinsically safe electrical equipment for hazardous areas.

Seven Star LLC lists Pepperl+Fuchs sensors, isolated barriers, power supplies and hazardous-area mobile devices, and supplies them to instrument and automation teams in Oman by exact model designation.

Ordering Pepperl+Fuchs parts: what we need

Send the complete model designation as printed on the device, including every suffix; a single letter can change the supply voltage or the output type. Add the part number if the label shows one. For barriers, tell us the field device and signal type, the number of channels and whether the safety loop needs a SIL-assessed module. For mobile devices, state the zone or division and the regional radio version.
