Pepperl+Fuchs NCN8-18GM60-B3B-V1 AS-i Inductive Sensor
Description
NCN8-18GM60-B3B-V1 AS-Interface inductive sensor with extended addressing
The NCN8-18GM60-B3B-V1 is an M18 inductive proximity sensor from the Pepperl+Fuchs comfort series that connects directly to an AS-Interface network instead of a PLC input card. It has a rated operating distance of 8 mm, non-flush installation, a stainless steel housing and an M12 4-pin plug. As an A/B node it supports extended addressing for up to 62 nodes on one AS-Interface segment.
In the part number, NCN is the non-flush inductive sensor line, 8 the rated distance in millimetres, 18GM60 the M18 housing of 60 mm length class, B3B the AS-Interface A/B node version and V1 the M12 plug connection.
Seven Star LLC supplies this sensor in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

Functions of the NCN8-18GM60-B3B-V1 beyond a simple switch
Data bits on the AS-i bus carry the switching state, a dynamic pre-fault message, oscillator monitoring and an “object too close” warning. The pre-fault message warns when a target passes through the unsafe zone of 0.8 to 1.2 times the rated distance, which signals that the sensor needs adjusting before it starts to miss targets. The object-too-close bit alerts the controller when the target comes within 10 % of the rated distance and could damage the sensor.
Two parameter bits set an on/off delay (on by default, about 15 ms with NO function) and the NO or NC function. The default address is 00 and can be changed by the bus master or an addressing unit. The identification codes are IO 0, ID A, ID1 7 and ID2 E.
System fit and related parts
Use the NCN8-18GM60-B3B-V1 in an AS-Interface installation where the sensors share the yellow flat cable with actuators, to avoid wiring each sensor to a PLC card. In a conventional installation, the NBB8-18GM50-E2 (PNP, flush, cable) is the normal equivalent in M18. The sensor is not for hazardous areas.
Selection and ordering checklist
- AS-Interface network with a gateway of at least version 2.1.
- Free address on the A or B side of the segment.
- Non-flush mounting with a free zone around the sensing face.
- Target material and reduction factor.
- M12 4-pin plug cable and its length.
- Ambient temperature range -25 to 70 °C.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the NCN8-18GM60-B3B-V1
Mount the M18 body so that the face projects beyond metal surfaces, because a non-flush sensor must keep a free zone to avoid false triggering. Connect via an M12 cable to an AS-i flat cable adapter, address the sensor, and use the LED pattern as installation help: yellow and red LEDs indicate whether the target lies in a safe zone, in the marginal zone or too close.
The green and red dual LEDs show power, oscillator fault and communication loss. In maintenance, read the diagnostic bits from the master to identify marginal sensors before failure.
Planning an AS-Interface layout around the NCN8-18GM60-B3B-V1
Each AS-Interface segment is normally limited in cable length and in the current that the power supply can deliver, so count the sensor current of the NCN8-18GM60-B3B-V1 (about 20 mA class operation with a voltage drop of 3.4 to 5 V in the on state) together with the other nodes. The datasheet gives an operating voltage window of 26.5 to 31.9 V on the bus, and a master that supports extended addressing is needed to use the B slave addresses of an A/B node.
Record the address of every sensor on the layout drawing and fit labels at the M12 connector. If a sensor must be replaced, the address of the new unit can be copied by the master, which avoids reprogramming the PLC. Use the oscillator-fault and no-communication LED patterns from the datasheet for first-line troubleshooting before changing hardware.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
The NCN8-18GM60-B3B-V1 is used on conveyors, filling lines, gates and valve skids in industrial plants and utilities in Oman where AS-Interface reduces cabling. The stainless housing and IP67 rating suit washdown areas in food, water and bottling plants.

About brand
Pepperl+Fuchs is a German manufacturer of industrial sensors and explosion protection equipment, founded in 1945 in Mannheim by Walter Pepperl and Ludwig Fuchs as a radio repair shop. Defective transformers led them into manufacturing, and the company developed its first proximity switch in the late 1950s. Pepperl+Fuchs is headquartered in Mannheim and is a pioneer of intrinsically safe electrical equipment for hazardous areas.
Seven Star LLC lists Pepperl+Fuchs sensors, isolated barriers, power supplies and hazardous-area mobile devices, and supplies them to instrument and automation teams in Oman by exact model designation.

Where Pepperl+Fuchs equipment is used
Isolated barriers sit between field instruments in Zone 0 or Zone 1 and the DCS or safety system in refineries, gas plants and chemical works. NAMUR sensors report valve position and machine states in classified areas. Photoelectric sensors and LiDAR scanners work in conveying, packaging, warehousing and vehicle guidance. Ex-rated tablets and phones are carried on operator rounds and maintenance jobs.

Ordering Pepperl+Fuchs parts: what we need
Send the complete model designation as printed on the device, including every suffix; a single letter can change the supply voltage or the output type. Add the part number if the label shows one. For barriers, tell us the field device and signal type, the number of channels and whether the safety loop needs a SIL-assessed module. For mobile devices, state the zone or division and the regional radio version.
