Carlo Gavazzi ICB12S30N04NO M12 Inductive Proximity Sensor
Description
An M12 inductive sensor with 4 mm range and NPN normally open output
The Carlo Gavazzi ICB12S30N04NO is an inductive proximity switch in a nickel-plated brass M12 housing with a 30 mm thread length (short body) and a 2 m cable. It senses ferrous and non-ferrous metal targets at a nominal sensing distance of 4 mm in a non-flush version, which means the active face needs a free zone of non-damping material around it when it is mounted in a metal bracket. The output is an NPN open-collector transistor, normally open, rated up to 200 mA.
The sensor operates from 10 to 36 V DC with protection against reverse polarity, short circuit and transients, a yellow LED that shows output ON, and a blinking LED at 2 Hz as a short-circuit or overload indication. The enclosure is rated IP67 and the housing front is a grey thermoplastic polyester cap with laser-engraved marking.

Mounting a non-flush M12 sensor
The datasheet distinguishes 2 mm flush types (marked F02) from 4 mm non-flush types (marked N04). A non-flush sensor reaches further but must project beyond the metal around it. The datasheet installation drawings give the minimum free zone and the spacing between neighbouring sensors in terms of the nominal distance Sn and the sensor diameter d (12 mm), and they require at least 6 x Sn between two sensors mounted facing each other. Follow those drawings, because a sensor sunk into metal that is meant for non-flush mounting loses range or switches unreliably.
Wiring and selection notes
An NPN output is a sinking output that pulls the signal toward 0 V, so confirm that it matches the input type of your PLC or counter. The ordering key also offers PNP outputs, normally closed versions and plug (M1) versions; check which type your controller expects. Do not exceed 200 mA, and use the derated 150 mA above 50 C. Tighten the two brass nuts to 10 Nm and mount the sensor on a fixed bracket; a mounting bracket for M12 sensors is listed as a separate Carlo Gavazzi accessory.
How the Carlo Gavazzi ICB12S30N04NO works
The sensor creates a small high-frequency field at its active face. A metal target entering the field changes the oscillation. The electronics detect the change and switch the NPN output on.
Where the ICB12S30N04NO is used

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the ICB12S30N04NO
Keep a free zone around the active face in a metal bracket. Tighten the nuts to the torque on the datasheet. Wire the brown, blue and black cores to the supply and the load. Check the yellow LED with a target in front of the face. Check the cable for damage at regular intervals.
