Typical use and installation notes

This is the economical standard-duty M18 sensor in the range: IP67 rather than IP68 and a 0.5 kHz switching frequency, but the same 8 mm reach as the flush extended-distance version once it is installed with the required free zone around the active face. It is a sensible fit for general machine guarding feedback, cylinder end-position checks on brackets and slow-moving metal parts on packaging or fabrication lines, where cost per point matters more than maximum frequency.

On site, check the free zone around the sensing face, use the correct tightening torque for the housing, and verify the output with the target at its real approach speed. Cable or connector damage and loose nuts are the usual causes of intermittent switching, so inspect them first during fault finding.

Selection check before ordering

Reading the code against the datasheet rows (a derived summary, not Turck’s own key): the leading NI corresponds to the mounting condition shown as Non-flush, the digits to the rated switching distance of 8 mm, the housing token to the design Threaded barrel, M18 x 1, the output suffix to 3-wire, NO contact, PNP, and the last element to the connection Connector, M12 × 1. Ident number 46147 identifies this exact variant in the Turck catalogue.

Before ordering, confirm the target material and gap, NO or changeover) of your PLC input, the connector type and cable length, the mounting condition (flush or non-flush) against the free zone around the sensor, and the supply voltage and output type (PNP or NPN. Values on this page are copied or summarised from the manufacturer datasheet; where the datasheet and a later revision differ, the manufacturer document governs.

Key features of the NI8-M18-AP6X-H1141

  • 8 mm rated switching distance from an M18 × 1 barrel, with a secured operating distance of up to 0.81 × Sn.
  • 3-wire DC PNP output with normally-open function, suitable for standard PLC sourcing inputs.
  • Wide 10–30 VDC supply with up to 200 mA load current and a maximum voltage drop of 1.8 V.
  • Complete wire-break and reverse-polarity protection plus cyclic short-circuit protection.
  • Yellow LED for switching state, visible during commissioning and fault finding.
  • M12 × 1 male connector, so the sensor can be replaced without rewiring the cable.

How the non-flush design affects mounting

A non-flush (non-embeddable) sensor generates a wider field than a flush type, which is what gives it the longer 8 mm reach in an M18 body. The trade-off is that the active face must not be surrounded by metal. Turck specifies mounting distances in the datasheet: the free zone in front of the face is 3 × Sn, the side gap S is 1.5 × B, the spacing between two sensors side by side (D) is 3 × B, and the opposite-facing distance G is 6 × Sn. The N value of 2 × Sn defines the clearance around the protruding part of the sensor. If these distances are ignored, the sensor may detect the bracket itself or two neighbouring sensors may interfere with each other.

The housing nut should not be tightened beyond 25 Nm. Over-tightening a chrome-plated brass thread can damage the barrel, so a torque wrench is advisable on production machinery.

Target and switching distance

The rated switching distance refers to a standard mild steel target. Non-ferrous metals such as stainless steel, aluminium and copper are detected at a shorter distance, so if the target is not mild steel, allow extra margin and check the correction factors in the Turck documentation. The hysteresis of 3–15 % prevents chatter when a target sits right at the switching point.

Applications and site conditions in Oman and the GCC

Typical uses include position detection on conveyors, end-of-travel confirmation on actuators, gear-tooth or cam counting at moderate speeds, and presence checks in packaging and bottling plants. With a 0.5 kHz switching frequency, the sensor is better suited to position sensing than to high-speed counting.

The ambient range of −25 to +70 °C covers most indoor and shaded outdoor locations in the region. In direct sun, a metal enclosure or machine guard can heat up well above the air temperature, so shading the sensor or mounting it away from hot surfaces is a sensible precaution. The IP67 rating protects against dust and temporary immersion, but it is not intended for continuous high-pressure washdown; in those areas an IP68 or IP69K variant is the better choice.

Installation and maintenance tips

  • Use a shielded or industrial M12 cordset and route it away from motor cables and VFD outputs.
  • Keep the active face free of metal swarf and fine iron dust, which can build up and cause false switching.
  • Check that the LED changes state when the target passes before connecting the output to the control logic.
  • When replacing a sensor, set the new unit at the same distance from the target and confirm the PNP/NO function matches the old one.

What to include in your RFQ

Please send the full type code NI8-M18-AP6X-H1141 and, if available, the ident number 46147, the quantity, whether you also need M12 cordsets or mounting brackets, and the required delivery location in Oman or elsewhere in the GCC. If you are replacing a sensor from another brand, a photo of its label helps us confirm the output type and connector pinout.

About brand

Turck is a German manufacturer of sensors, connectivity and fieldbus technology for factory and process automation, founded in 1965 and headquartered in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The family-owned group develops and manufactures sensors, connectors, interface technology and I/O systems.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Turck sensors and I/O devices for machine builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.

Turck product series

Most of the Turck products here are inductive proximity sensors: threaded M12, M18 and M30 barrels in flush (BI) and non-flush (NI) versions, uprated-range (U) sensors, rectangular CP40 and CP80 housings and BIM magnetic-field sensors for detecting pistons in pneumatic cylinders. The type code describes the sensor; in BI5-M18-AP6X-H1141, BI means flush mounting, 5 is the switching distance in mm, AP6X a three-wire PNP output and H1141 the M12 connector.

Turck also makes RU ultrasonic sensors, PS pressure, TS temperature and LS level sensors, FCI inline flow sensors, the CMVT vibration and temperature sensor for condition monitoring over IO-Link, and fieldbus and Ethernet I/O modules and communication components.

Where Turck sensors are used

Position detection on conveyors, packaging machines, presses and robotic cells; level, pressure and temperature monitoring on hydraulic units and process skids; and vibration monitoring on motors, pumps and fans.
