A full-metal weld-immune sensor with IO-Link and IP69K protection

The Contrinex DW-AS-703-M18-693 is the M18 full-inox weld-immune inductive sensor with a 10 mm embeddable sensing distance. It is a one-piece V2A stainless steel sensor with an anti-spatter coating, designed for medium-frequency fields up to 15 kA and 50 Hz fields up to 40 mT as printed by Contrinex.

Outputs are PNP normally open or IO-Link 1.1 on an M12 4-pin connector, supply is 10 to 30 VDC, and the enclosure rating is IP68/IP69K. The M18 size is the most common format on welding fixtures and gun-position feedback.

Selection and installation notes

Compared with the classic M18 sensing 8 mm, this model adds 2 mm of distance, IO-Link and a higher ambient temperature limit (-25 to +85 C). The metal-free zone is 25 mm around the face and 50 mm in front, and the correction factors are 1 for steel, 0.85 for copper and 1 for aluminum. Embedded in a steel support the distance is further multiplied by 0.7.

The maximum tightening torque is 50 Nm and the switching frequency is 15 Hz, so this is a position and presence sensor rather than a counting sensor. Confirm the IO-Link master and the welding field level before ordering.

How the Contrinex DW-AS-703-M18-693 works

The sensor makes a high-frequency magnetic field at its face, and a metal target in this field changes the oscillation, so the output switches. In welding cells there are strong fields from the welding current. The weld-immune design keeps the sensor stable in these fields, and the one-piece stainless steel body with an anti-spatter coating resists weld spatter and hard washdown. The IO-Link 1.1 interface can also send process data to the controller.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Fit the sensor in the bracket and tighten it to no more than 50 Nm. Keep the metal-free zone clear, which is 25 mm around the face and 50 mm in front. If the sensor is embedded in a steel support, apply the lower correction factors. Connect the M12 cable and check the output by moving a target to the face. Use the IO-Link master for settings, and keep the spatter coating clean and undamaged.

Choosing the right DW-AS-703-M18-693 mounting

Check whether the sensor will be flush in a steel support or free in air, because the correction factors differ. In a steel support the distance falls to about 0.7 of the free value. The standard target is 30 x 30 x 1 mm of FE360 steel, and smaller or thinner targets shorten the working distance.
