Flowserve Valtek Survivor Erosion-Resistant Control Valve
Description
Flowserve Valtek Survivor erosion-resistant control valve explained
The Flowserve Valtek Survivor (also referred to as the Mark 10 Survivor) is a severe-service globe-style control valve for fluids that erode, corrode and flash at the same time. When part of a liquid turns to vapour across the trim, velocity can approach sonic levels, and any abrasive particles in the stream then cut through ordinary trim in weeks. The Survivor is designed around that failure mode. Seven Star LLC supplies Valtek Survivor valves in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
It is a series, not a single catalogue number, so the valve is configured for each job: size, pressure class, trim material, packing, actuator and positioner are all chosen from the ranges below.
Survivor control valve technical specifications

The brochure and the web page quote slightly different size ranges, so the exact size and class of each order must be confirmed with the build data.
How the Survivor resists erosion and flashing
- Sweep-angle body: the flow turns gradually instead of hitting a sharp corner, which lowers inlet velocity and removes stagnant points.
- Flow-over (flow-to-close) action: only the plug tip and seat-ring inner surface see the highest velocity, and those parts are hardened.
- Extended Venturi seat: channels high-energy fluid through a hardened passage away from the body.
- Clamped seat ring: no cage and no internal threads that can seize, and the seat is released by unbolting the valve from the line.
- Characterized plug with thick stem and double top-stem guiding, avoiding cage guiding that can bind in slurry.
- Clamshell plug design for replacing worn ceramics without thread binding.
Ceramic trim and seat options for the Survivor
Optional solid ceramic trim components extend life where metals fail quickly. Flowserve lists tungsten carbide, partially stabilized zirconia, silicon nitride and alpha sintered silicon carbide. Choice depends on erosion resistance, chemical compatibility, thermal shock and fracture resistance, so the process fluid and its temperature swing should be stated in the enquiry.
For flashing letdown into a vessel, optional diverging seats and seat extensions direct the jet and carry the hardened seat past the tank wall to protect downstream equipment. For complex systems Flowserve offers optional CFD study, provided the user supplies detailed system dimensions and operating data.
Packing, actuator and positioner choices for Survivor
The Survivor has a deep packing box with a standard dual packing arrangement and lubricator port, so the lower set shields the upper set from particulate. An optional wiper guide cleans the stem and limits solids entry. Valtek VL series actuators are standard; their stiffness prevents plug slamming while throttling near the seat, a weakness of soft diaphragm actuators on flow-to-close valves. Logix digital positioners add diagnostics and tuning.
Survivor duty examples from the manufacturer
| Service | Conditions stated by manufacturer |
|---|---|
| Autoclave level control (mining) | 20 to 25% flashing, 30 to 40% crushed ore, high sulfuric acid, 61 bar inlet, 50.5 bar drop, 270 °C |
| FCC tank bottoms (refinery) | Light-hydrocarbon outgassing, catalyst fines, 8.6 bar inlet, 6.3 bar drop, 360 °C |
These are published examples, not guaranteed limits of every build.
Selection and ordering checklist for Survivor
- Fluid, solids percentage, particle hardness and size
- Flow, inlet pressure, pressure drop and vapour pressure to estimate flashing
- Inlet temperature and thermal shock risk
- Size, ASME class or PN rating and end connections
- Trim: metal or ceramic type, seat extension, diverging seat
- Packing type and fail-safe action
- Actuator, positioner, air supply and area classification
Installation and maintenance of the Survivor
Install with the flow direction marked on the body and give the outlet a straight run into the vessel or downstream piping that can accept the jet. Inspect plug tip, seat ring and extension at planned shutdowns; wear is gradual and predictable, and ceramic parts should be handled carefully because they are hard but brittle. Lubricate the packing port per the user instructions. Keep spare plug, seat ring and packing set for critical letdown valves.
Typical Survivor applications in Oman and the GCC
Flowserve lists mining, pulp and paper, oil and gas (upstream and downstream) and geothermal power among the target industries. In Oman and the region this suits slurry letdown in mining and metal processing, refinery bottoms and slop services, produced-water and sand-bearing streams, and geothermal-type flashing service. Hot, dusty sites make instrument-air quality and positioner protection important.
Information to send with an RFQ for Survivor
- Process data sheet with flows, pressures and temperatures
- Solids content and particle description
- Size, class, material and trim preference
- Actuator and positioner requirement
- Existing valve model if replacing one
Site conditions in Oman for the Survivor
Valves and their accessories in Oman work in demanding conditions: high ambient temperatures, direct sun on outdoor pipe racks, dust, and corrosive coastal air at many oil, gas and water sites. When you specify the Survivor, confirm the pressure and temperature ratings, body and trim materials and any sour-service or hazardous-area requirements against the actual line data, and check that seals and soft parts suit the process medium and the full temperature range.
For reliable operation, plan access for maintenance, define which spare parts are kept on site, and record the configuration of each installed Survivor. Sending the complete process data sheet with your RFQ allows the selection to be checked before the order is placed.
Documents and quotation
A Flowserve Survivor brochure is attached on this page. It covers features, specifications and trim options, but a valve must still be sized for your exact duty.

About brand
Flowserve is the American flow control company for pumps, valves, mechanical seals and valve automation, known through brands such as Durco, Worthington, Byron Jackson, Valtek, Limitorque, Worcester, Logix and Argus. It was formed on 22 July 1997 by the merger of equals of Durco International and BW/IP, whose heritage reaches back to Simpson & Thompson (1790) and Byron Jackson (1872). Flowserve Corporation is headquartered in Irving, Texas, and listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Flowserve pumps, seals, control valves, ball valves, actuators and positioners for process plants in Oman, working from the nameplate data and the manufacturer's documentation.

FAQ
Questions about the Flowserve Valtek Survivor Erosion-Resistant Control
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What is the Valtek Survivor designed for?
It is built for severe erosion, corrosion and flashing duty, such as slurry letdown, where particles and near-sonic velocities destroy conventional trim.
02What pressure ratings are available?
The brochure lists PN 10 to 250 and ASME 150 to 1500, with raised-face flanged or RTJ ends.
03What seat shutoff does it give?
Metal seats are Class IV and V, and ceramic seats are Class IV.
04Which ceramic trim materials are offered?
Tungsten carbide, partially stabilized zirconia, silicon nitride and alpha sintered silicon carbide are listed as optional trim materials.
05Why is there no cage?
A clamped seat ring and characterized plug remove the cage and threaded parts that can bind or seize when slurry gets into the valve.
