Flowserve Logix 3400MD Fieldbus Digital Positioner
Description
Flowserve Logix 3400MD Foundation Fieldbus digital positioner
The Flowserve Logix 3400MD is a Foundation Fieldbus digital valve positioner that uses piezo technology to drive linear and rotary pneumatic actuators. It sits on an H1 segment as a regular fieldbus device, carries its own function blocks, and can be set up on the valve with local buttons and DIP switches. Seven Star LLC supplies the Logix 3400MD in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat; this page condenses the manufacturer information to help you prepare an enquiry.
If your plant runs HART instead of fieldbus, the Logix 520MD+ and Logix 3800e belong to the same family but are different products. The Logix 3400MD is specifically the fieldbus model (the older Logix 3400IQ is a separate earlier model).

How the Logix 3400MD works on a fieldbus segment
The positioner receives its set point from a controller over the bus, normally through the AO block, and the transducer block turns it into a valve position target. A Hall-effect sensor measures stem or shaft position, and a driver module with a piezo pressure modulator positions the pneumatic stage that loads or vents the actuator. The manual stresses that Logix MD positioners no longer rely on cams; position characteristics are implemented in firmware.
Because AO, DI, DO, OS, IS and PID blocks are all inside the positioner, control can execute in the field. A PID block in the valve lets a local loop run without waiting for the host cycle, and the two DI blocks let the valve report position or alarm states back to the controller. The positioner is powered from the bus, so there are no extra field wires beyond the segment.
Local setup on the Logix 3400MD
A feature that site engineers value is that a valve can be calibrated without a host or handheld. In the local interface, the RE-CAL button runs an automatic zero and span routine, and two jog buttons help when the open position has no fixed stop. Six DIP switches select basic behaviour such as air action and position characterisation and two relate to fieldbus options. The positioner reads the DIP switches each time RE-CAL is pressed; settings made through the transducer block take priority until the next RE-CAL.
- Position characteristic: linear, 30:1 equal percent, quick open or a 21-point custom curve set by a host or handheld.
- Auto Tune: when On, the positioner chooses gain at each calibration, with the rotary GAIN switch adjusting response; the neutral position is E.
- Valve stability setting: low-friction or high-friction optimisation to avoid cycling on sticky valves.
- LED codes: green, yellow and red sequences report calibration progress, operating state and faults.
Hazardous-area ratings of the Logix 3400MD
The manual lists certification by region and by protection method. The table summarises the main marking groups; the label on the actual unit is the only authority for a given installation.
| Protection method | Markings listed in the manual |
|---|---|
| Explosion-proof / flameproof | ATEX Ex db IIB+H2 Gb IP65; IECEx Ex db IIB+H2; FM/CSA Class I Div 1 Groups B-D |
| Intrinsically safe | ATEX/IECEx Ex ia IIC; FM/CSA Class I Div 1 Groups A-G, Zone 0 Ex ia IIC; FISCO compliant |
| Non-incendive | Class I Div 2 Groups A-D; Ex ic nA IIC Zone 2 |
| Dust | Ex tb IIIC T95 °C Db (flameproof), Ex ia IIIC T95 °C Da (IS) |
The manual also contains a special condition: in a Zone 0 location, cast aluminium enclosures must be installed so that sparks from friction or impact cannot occur.
Logix 3400MD selection and ordering checklist
The Logix 3400MD handles Foundation Fieldbus. For HART-based loops, Flowserve offers the Logix 520MD+ (piezo, diagnostic levels up to Pro), the Logix 3800e (value-based, one-button setup) and the compact Logix 1500 for single-acting actuators. When specifying, decide on the network first, then the diagnostics level.
- Host system and DD files: confirm your control system supports FF ITK 5.1 devices, and that the device description is available.
- Segment design: number of devices, power budget at 18 mA each and whether FISCO is required.
- Enclosure and area rating: explosion-proof, intrinsically safe or non-incendive, aluminium or stainless steel.
- Mounting: linear or rotary valve, actuator brand and stroke length for the follower arm.
- Conduit thread (1/2 in. NPT or M20), noting that the two look similar but cannot be mixed.
- Instrument air at 30 to 150 psig that meets ISA 7.0.01, or dry nitrogen or sweet natural gas.
Installing and commissioning the Logix 3400MD
Mount the positioner so that the follower arm is approximately horizontal at 50 % stroke, then tube it to the actuator with the correct air action. The manual warns that tubing orientation is critical and must be verified before the first stroke calibration. Connect the bus with FF-rated cable, install FF-compatible barriers where intrinsically safe segments are used, and ground the shield only as the manual describes.
After a successful RE-CAL, the status LEDs show a normal pattern, and the transducer block can be used for further tuning. The 3400MD can also record valve signatures and step signatures, which are valuable baselines for later maintenance comparison. Replace worn soft goods and filters as part of normal shutdown work.
Typical Logix 3400MD applications in Oman and the GCC
Fieldbus positioners are common in newer process units where the control system architecture, for example in gas treatment, power and utilities, was designed around H1 segments. The ability to commission a valve locally is useful in remote or hot locations, as is the stainless steel housing option for coastal and offshore-style atmospheres where salt and humidity attack aluminium. Plan enclosure shading, check the temperature class and keep conduit entries sealed against dust.

FAQ
Questions about the Flowserve Logix 3400MD Fieldbus Digital Positioner
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What is the Logix 3400MD?
It is a Foundation Fieldbus digital valve positioner from Flowserve. It uses a piezo pilot stage, includes AO, DI, DO, PID, OS and IS function blocks, and can be calibrated locally with buttons and DIP switches.
02What power does the Logix 3400MD need?
It is bus powered at 9 to 32 VDC with an operating current of 18 mA. Intrinsically safe segments are limited to 24 V, and FISCO segments to 17.5 V.
03Which fieldbus version does it support?
The user instructions list Foundation Fieldbus ITK 5.1 and FISCO compliance. Device description files are available from the manufacturer or the fieldbus organisation.
04Can it be calibrated without a host or handheld?
Yes. The RE-CAL button performs automatic zero and span, jog buttons assist when there is no fixed open stop, and an Auto Tune option sets gain. Transducer block settings override DIP switches until the next RE-CAL.
05What air supply pressure is allowed?
The manual gives 30 to 150 psig, with air that meets ISA 7.0.01. A supply regulator is recommended where the line pressure exceeds the actuator rating.
