Flowserve Byron Jackson HDO/HSO API 610 BB5 Barrel Pump

Description

Flowserve Byron Jackson HDO and HSO API 610 BB5 double-case barrel pump

The Flowserve HDO and its sister model HSO are horizontal multistage barrel pumps in the Byron Jackson line, built for high-pressure, high-energy services. The HDO has a radially split outer barrel containing an axially split inner casing with a double volute and opposed impellers. Pumps of this design fall into API 610 category BB5, and the family is offered in both general purpose and special purpose configurations. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat and quotes HDO and HSO units, spares and related support in Oman and the GCC.

The pump is a range, not one catalogue number. The core HDO/HSO designations cover single or double suction first-stage execution, and special builds extend the family to the HDO-T and HSO-T power recovery turbines and the HSO-CK coke crusher pump. Each machine is engineered from one of 31 proven hydraulics modified to suit the duty, so the details of any individual HDO come from its data sheet and test curve.

How the HDO double-case design works

A double-case pump nests a complete multistage pump, the inner casing, inside a pressure vessel, the outer barrel. The inner casing carries the hydraulic load of the stages, while the barrel holds the discharge pressure. Because the outer case sees pressure evenly from the inside, its joint is radial and sealed by a cover, rather than a horizontal split flange that could open up under extreme pressure. This is the main reason barrel designs are used where operating pressures are far higher than those of single-case pumps.

The HDO uses opposed impellers: half of the impellers face one way and half the other, so the axial thrust from one group balances the other. This reduces the load on the thrust bearing and lets the shaft run with limited thrust reaction. The double-volute inner casing keeps radial forces low across the flow range, which helps seals and bearings in long runs between overhauls.

In this style of barrel pump the inner casing can normally be withdrawn from the barrel as a cartridge assembly. This is a major maintenance benefit because the barrel and its piping can remain installed while the rotating element is replaced by a spare cartridge.

Where the HDO fits: related HSO, HDO-T and HSO-CK versions

The two share one family and serve boiler feed, high-pressure injection, hydrocracker and similar heavy-duty duties. The HDO-T and HSO-T are power recovery turbines: when a high-pressure process stream drops to lower pressure, a turbine on the same train can recover shaft power instead of wasting it across a control valve. The HSO-CK design targets delayed coking, where high-pressure water is used for decoking.

For lighter duties, the axially split single-stage DVSH is a more suitable choice. For the highest pressures, this range is the heavy end of Flowserve between-bearings pumps. Typical drivers are motors and steam turbines, often through a speed-increasing gearbox or variable-speed coupling.

HDO selection and ordering checklist

Before an HDO or HSO can be quoted, the project needs a complete hydraulic and mechanical definition. Prepare the following:

  • Pumped fluid, density, viscosity, vapour pressure, contaminants and H2S or chloride content.
  • Rated, normal and minimum flow with the required differential head or discharge pressure.
  • Suction pressure, NPSH available, and design pressure for the barrel.
  • Maximum and normal operating temperature.
  • Whether a general purpose or special purpose build is wanted, and the API 610 edition or customer specification to apply.
  • Material class and corrosion allowance.
  • Single or double suction first stage.
  • Driver details, gearbox or variable speed drive, and the base plate scope.
  • Seal arrangement, flush and barrier plans, and instrumentation requirements.
  • Testing requirements, including witnessed performance and NPSH tests.

If the application is power recovery or coke cutting, say so at the start: those versions use their own hydraulics and trim.

HDO installation, commissioning and maintenance

Large high-pressure barrel pumps need careful foundation, grouting and piping design. Keep nozzle loads within the allowed values, align the coupling at operating temperature where possible, and provide the warm-up and balancing lines recommended for the specific duty. Verify minimum flow protection and automatic recirculation before the first start, since multistage pumps in high-energy duty can be damaged quickly by low-flow operation.

During maintenance, the cartridge design means the rotating assembly is withdrawn from the barrel, inspected and replaced with a spare. Record running clearances, check bearing and seal condition, and review vibration and bearing temperature trends. The barrel cover, studs, gaskets or seal rings should be renewed according to the manufacturer guidance whenever the cartridge is removed. For critical units, a spare cartridge held on site greatly shortens an outage.

Typical HDO applications in Oman and the GCC

The published industry list for the HDO and HSO covers oil and gas (upstream, midstream, downstream and LNG) and chemicals including petrochemicals and biofuels. In Oman and the Gulf, typical roles include hydrocracker and hydrotreater charge, high-pressure water injection for reservoir support, high-pressure boiler feed in refinery and power systems, and amine or process services in gas plants.

In hot, dusty and humid locations, attention should go to cooling water for bearing housings and seal coolers, lube oil temperature control, and the corrosion protection of external parts. Where seawater is used for cooling, heat exchanger materials and fouling control become important design inputs.

HDO and HSO configuration summary

Version Description Typical use
HDO Double-case barrel with opposed impellers; single or double suction first stage General multistage high-pressure services
HSO Related double-case barrel with similar hydraulics and the same execution options Services defined by the project specification
HDO-T / HSO-T Hydraulic power recovery turbine Recovering energy from high-pressure liquid
HSO-CK Coke crusher design Delayed coking water service

Use this table as a map. The final selection always depends on the project data sheet.

Information to send with an HDO RFQ

Send the full duty data from the checklist, the specification references, the tag or item number, and the delivery site. For spares, add the pump serial number, the nameplate, the stage count and the original order reference when known. Say whether you need a complete pump, an inner cartridge, or individual parts such as impellers, wear rings, bearings and seals. Mention any inspection, test or documentation needs, as these affect the lead time. Photographs of the nameplate, the coupling end and the barrel cover help our team identify the right parts quickly and avoid mistakes when the pump has been modified in service by earlier owners.

Documents and quotation

Flowserve publishes an HSO/HDO brochure. We do not have a file attached to this page, so send the HDO or HSO configuration and your duty data and we will confirm which documents are available.

FAQ

Questions about the Flowserve Byron Jackson HDO/HSO API 610 BB5 Barrel

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What is the Flowserve HDO pump?
The HDO is a horizontal, multistage, double-case barrel pump with a radially split outer casing and an axially split inner casing carrying opposed impellers in a double-volute arrangement. It belongs to the API 610 BB5 family and is designed for medium and high pressure services.
02What is the difference between HDO and HSO?
Both are volute-style double-case barrel pumps. They are offered in general purpose and special purpose configurations, and the data supplied by the manufacturer groups them as one family. The HDO/HSO designations cover the single or double suction first stage options.
03What operating limits are published for the HDO/HSO range?
Flows reach 4,000 m3/h (17,610 gpm), heads reach 5,500 m (18,000 ft), discharge pressures reach 450 bar (6,525 psig) and temperatures reach 450 °C (840 °F). These are upper limits for the family and not the capability of one specific pump.
04What do HDO-T, HSO-T and HSO-CK mean?
HDO-T and HSO-T are the power recovery turbine versions, where the pump hydraulics run in reverse to recover energy from a high-pressure liquid stream. HSO-CK is the coke crusher design used in delayed coking service.
05Does the pump follow API 610 only?
The family meets the latest edition of API 610 and can also be built to other customer specifications. The manufacturer notes that units are often made to customer standards that go beyond API 610, so the project specification should be named at enquiry.
