Sulzer SMD Axially Split Double-Suction Pump

Description

Axially split double-suction pumps for raw, sea and clean water duty

The Sulzer SMD is a single-stage, double-suction pump with an axially split casing, designed for water abstraction and transport, desalination, water treatment and supply, irrigation and flood control, and district cooling and heating. Sulzer offers it in two mechanical envelopes: the standard SMD, aimed at municipal water treatment and distribution where a higher level of standardisation gives the most cost-effective solution and shortest lead times, and the configured SMD, which combines standardisation with modular options for water abstraction, transport and desalination duties. The brochure states the pump is suitable for drinking water, with ACS and NSF 61 certificates available.

Design features that reduce maintenance

The double-suction impeller gives inherent hydraulic balance of axial thrust and good NPSHR at flow run-out, while the double-volute casing balances radial loads and is self-draining. Bearings, bearing nuts, isolators, the mechanical seal and shaft sleeves can be replaced without removing the upper casing, and dowel pins and precision register fits mean the rotor assembly does not need adjusting in the casing. Options include a cooling fan on the thrust bearing for high speed or high ambient temperature, and connections for temperature and vibration instruments.

What to confirm before ordering

Provide duty flow and head, fluid (raw, brackish or sea water), temperature, NPSH available, frequency, material combination and whether a horizontal or vertical arrangement is required. Other Sulzer pumps on this site include the ABS Piranha PIR-S21/2 grinder pump; more are listed under Pumps.

About brand

Pressure sewer systems that discharge through narrow pipe rely on grinder pumps, and the ABS Piranha is the Sulzer answer to that duty. Sulzer has worked in pumps and fluid engineering since 1834 from Winterthur, Switzerland. Seven Star LLC lists the Sulzer ABS Piranha PIR-S21/2 submersible grinder pump and supplies Sulzer pumps and parts to utilities and contractors in Oman.

Sulzer ABS Piranha grinder pump series

The Piranha range is split into the S series, which includes the S21, and the PE series with IE3 motors. In front of the impeller sit a spiral bottom plate, a stationary cutter ring and a shredding rotor that cut cloths and plastic before they reach the hydraulics. The bottom plate is adjustable to take up wear. Versions exist for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, three-phase 400 V and single-phase 230 V supplies.

Ordering Sulzer pumps and spare parts: what we need

Send the full type designation and the serial number from the nameplate, the supply voltage, phase and frequency, the discharge size, and whether an explosion-protected version is required. For cutter or seal parts, the nameplate photo is enough for us to trace the parts list. This applies equally to GCC municipal projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What flow range does the Sulzer SMD cover?
200 to 25,000 m3/h at 50 Hz (1,100 to 110,000 USgpm at 60 Hz).
What is the maximum head and pressure?
Up to 260 m head and up to 34 bar pressure.
What is the difference between standard and configured SMD?
The standard SMD targets municipal water with standardised design; the configured SMD adds modular options such as heavy-duty bearings and other seal arrangements for abstraction, transport and desalination.
Which casing materials are offered?
Ductile iron, carbon steel, duplex and super duplex, depending on the material combination.
Is a vertical arrangement available?
Yes, the SMDV vertical arrangement is an option, with an interchangeable casing.
