Bell & Gossett Series e-80 In-Line Centrifugal Pump

Description

Overview

The Bell & Gossett e-80 is a close-coupled, in-line mounted, single stage centrifugal pump that Bell & Gossett describes as delivering best-in-class hydraulic performance and optimised efficiency. Suction and discharge flanges sit on a common centreline, so the pump installs directly in the pipe run like a valve, saving floor space compared with a base-mounted pump. The Series e-80 is available in sizes from 1.5 inch through 8 inch, offers a broad efficiency range for fixed or variable speed operation, and can be ordered with an integrated variable frequency drive using sensored or sensorless control.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Bell & Gossett e-80 on request to HVAC contractors, consultants and building operators in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. In-line pumps are the usual choice for secondary chilled water circuits, fan coil loops and plant rooms where space is limited, which describes most commercial towers, hotels and hospitals in the region.

Operating Principle

In the Bell & Gossett e-80, the impeller is mounted directly on the extended shaft of a vertical solid shaft motor, so there is no separate pump bearing frame or coupling. Liquid enters the volute from the in-line suction flange, turns into the eye of the enclosed impeller and is discharged into the volute, where velocity is converted to pressure before the flow leaves through the opposite flange on the same axis. This close-coupled arrangement keeps the rotating assembly short and stiff and makes the whole unit compact.

The Bell & Gossett e-80 impellers are stainless steel to sustain hydraulic performance, resist chemicals and reduce corrosion, and they are balanced to ANSI/HI Grade G6.3 for quiet running. The built-in seal chamber has anti-vortex baffles and is fed by a flexible stainless steel braided hose from the discharge, which ensures the mechanical seal is continuously cooled and lubricated. The internally flushed seal uses a ceramic seat and carbon ring suitable for continuous operation at 225 degrees F.

Engineering Design of the Bell & Gossett e-80

The Bell & Gossett e-80 has a Class 30 cast iron volute, a carbon steel shaft covered by a stainless steel sleeve over the whole wetted area under the seal, a 304 stainless steel impeller keyed to the shaft and secured by a locking cap screw, and a cellulose fibre volute gasket. A precisely machined rigid cast iron motor bracket ensures concentric alignment between motor and pump, and allows the motor to be rotated at 90 degree intervals for convenient junction box positioning. Gauge tappings are provided at the suction and discharge nozzles, along with drain ports.

The back pull-out design allows the pump to be serviced without disturbing the piping, keeping downtime to a minimum, and four tapped holes in the bottom of the volute accept an ANSI/ASME flange for temporary support during installation. Motors are NEMA Premium efficiency: a JM drip-proof motor with the standard seal or a JP motor with the stuffing box option, from 0.75 to 50 hp at 1750 rpm and 5 to 60 hp at 3500 rpm, with TEFC enclosures optional. Each pump is factory pressure tested per Hydraulic Institute standards.

Key Features

The Bell & Gossett e-80 offers these practical benefits to designers and maintenance teams:

  • Close-coupled in-line construction saves plant room floor space and installs directly in the pipeline.
  • Sizes from 1.5 inch to 8 inch cover a broad flow range at 1750 and 3550 rpm.
  • Stainless steel impellers balanced to ANSI/HI G6.3 resist corrosion and run quietly.
  • An internally flushed mechanical seal with anti-vortex baffles and braided hose flush line extends seal life.
  • Optional stuffing box seals extend the working pressure to 250 or 300 psi.
  • Back pull-out design allows repairs without disturbing the piping.
  • Horizontal or vertical installation, with optional flange mounting supports.
  • Optional ITSC or IT integrated variable speed drives and Technologic PPS control of up to eight pumps in parallel.

Industrial Applications

Bell & Gossett targets the Series e-80 at hydronic heating and cooling systems, light industrial process and general service. Across Oman the Bell & Gossett e-80 is well suited to secondary chilled water and fan coil circuits in Muscat hotels and office buildings, hot water circulation in hospitals and hostels, cooling water for small process equipment, and booster duties in plant rooms where floor area is limited.

When fitted with the integrated Technologic Sensorless Control drive, the pump follows varying building loads without separate differential pressure sensors, which reduces wiring and commissioning work on retrofit projects. Seven Star LLC supplies the Bell & Gossett e-80 with seal kits, impellers and controls for projects in Muscat, Sohar, Salalah and across the GCC, and our engineering team helps match the pump size and impeller diameter to the published Bell & Gossett curves.

About brand
Chilled water plants, boiler rooms and condenser water loops are where the Bell & Gossett name is most often found on a pump nameplate. The company, founded in 1916 and based in Morton Grove, USA, builds centrifugal pumps and hydronic system components. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists three Bell and Gossett pumps for mechanical contractors and facility teams in Oman and the GCC: the Series e-80, e-1510 and e-1531.

Bell & Gossett pump series we list

The Series e-80 is an in-line centrifugal pump mounted directly in the pipework. The Series e-1510 is a base-mounted end suction pump with a separate motor and coupling. The Series e-1531 is the close-coupled end suction version, offered in 15 sizes with a cast iron volute. Beyond pumps, the brand covers heat exchangers, air and dirt separators, expansion tanks, flow balancing products and packaged pumping systems.

Ordering Bell & Gossett pumps and parts: what we need

Send the series and size from the nameplate, the impeller diameter, the serial number, and the motor power, speed, voltage and frequency. For a new selection give the duty point as flow and head, the liquid and its temperature. For seal kits, impellers or bearings, the pump serial number is the key reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Series e-80 be installed horizontally as well as vertically?
Yes. The e-80 is designed for horizontal or vertical in-line mounting. The bottom of the volute is tapped with four bolt holes for an ANSI/ASME flange that gives temporary support during installation, and optional flange mounting supports are available. The cast iron motor bracket lets the motor be rotated in 90 degree steps to position the junction box.
What pressure ratings are available?
With the standard mechanical seal the pump is rated for a maximum working pressure of 175 psi on open or closed clear water systems. An optional stuffing box style seal is available in 175, 250 or 300 psi working pressures for closed or open systems where temperature or pressure exceed the limits of the standard seal.
Which motors are used?
A NEMA Premium JM vertical solid shaft motor in a drip-proof enclosure is standard with the mechanical seal, and a NEMA Premium JP motor is used with the stuffing box configuration. TEFC enclosures are optional. Motors range from 0.75 to 50 hp at 1750 rpm and 5 to 60 hp at 3500 rpm.
Can the pump run at variable speed?
Yes. The e-80 can be supplied with an integrated Technologic Sensorless Control (ITSC) drive, which provides variable flow and sensorless curve control without wired transducers, or with the Integrated Technologic (IT) drive for building automation control. Up to eight pumps can run in parallel under a Technologic PPS controller.
