H2scan HY-OPTIMA 5232 Self-Calibrating Hydrogen Process Analyzer
Description
Self-calibrating hydrogen sensing in a 144 mm in-line body
HY-OPTIMA 5232 is a compact in-line hydrogen analyzer built on H2scan solid-state sensing with drift-correcting self-calibration. The datasheet describes it as maintenance-free, needing no calibration gas, no reference gas and no carrier gas, and states that it has no cross sensitivity to other gases. The body measures 144.4 x 50 x 50 mm and weighs 748 g, so it can be mounted in a gas line or integrated into an existing OEM analyzer system.
The measuring range is 0.4% to 5% hydrogen with 0.3% accuracy and repeatability and a T90 response below 60 seconds. H2scan quotes a total cost of ownership reduction of more than 40% over the long lifespan; this is a manufacturer claim and depends on the application.

Features that matter on a refinery or hydrogen plant
- Self-calibration removes drift and means no calibration gas bottles have to be managed at the analyzer.
- Tolerant of various harsh background contaminants, per the datasheet.
- Relay outputs can trigger alarms in a safety system, while Modbus and 4-20 mA feed a DCS or PLC.
- Compact form factor for in-line integration in process gas streams.
The 5232 is a general-area device with CE marking on the datasheet; it carries no hazardous-area certification there. For intrinsically safe installations compare the HY-OPTIMA 5330 series.
Applications, selection and installation
H2scan lists chemical facilities, refineries, petrochemical plants, gas manufacturing, hydrogen production and distribution, fuel cells and electrolyzers. At 5% full scale the unit is aimed at low-range hydrogen monitoring such as hydrogen in blended gas, purge streams and vents rather than high-purity hydrogen lines.
Check that the operating pressure stays within 0.95 to 1.1 ATM absolute, that the 12-pin M23 connector mates with your cable, and that the M20 face seal sensor fitting suits your line adapter. Browse the gas analyzer systems category for related analyzers.
Choosing between the 5232 and the other HY-OPTIMA analyzers
The 5232 occupies the low-range, self-calibrating position in the H2scan catalogue. If your stream runs above 5% hydrogen, the 2700 and 700B series reach 100% but require calibration every 90 days with standard gas. If the analyzer must sit in a hazardous area, the intrinsically safe HY-OPTIMA 5330 series is certified for Class I Division 1 and 2 Groups B, C, D and Ex ia (H2) Ga on its own datasheet, whereas the 5232 datasheet lists CE only.
In power terms the 5232 draws 5 W from 9 to 30 VDC, so a standard 12 V or 24 V instrument supply is sufficient. Its operating temperature range of -40 to 70°C is wider than the 700B (-20 to 55°C) and the 2700 (-20 to 55°C), which makes it a candidate for outdoor skids that see Gulf summer heat or winter nights in northern Oman. This comparison is derived from the individual datasheets and does not replace the manufacturer verification of your conditions.
During commissioning, wire the three-wire RS-485 Modbus link and 4-20 mA loop, test the two open-collector relay circuits against your alarm logic, and verify the pin-out of the twelve-pin M23 connector with the manufacturer manual before applying power.
Calibration planning is the main operating difference: the 5232 removes the 90 day gas calibration visit that the 700B and 2700 datasheets quote, which matters for remote or unmanned stations in the Omani interior where reaching the analyzer is costly.
Document control: the datasheet used for this page is H2scan document 90000273, printed with a 6.26 revision mark, and it states that specifications are subject to change without notice. Ask us to confirm the current revision with the manufacturer, together with the operation manual, before you place an order for the HY-OPTIMA 5232.
Integration and commissioning
The 5232 is often chosen when an OEM or system integrator wants hydrogen measurement inside a larger analyzer package without adding a calibration gas supply. General engineering note (not from the datasheet): even with self-calibration, a commissioning check with a known hydrogen mixture is good practice, because it confirms the sample path, the flow and the Modbus or 4-20 mA scaling in the control system end to end.
Plan the wiring around the twelve-pin M23 connector and the 9 to 30 VDC supply, and map the Modbus registers before site work starts so that the reading, status and alarm bits are available in the DCS or PLC from day one. The M20 face seal fitting to ISO 9974-1 needs a matching port in the sample block or manifold, which should be checked when the panel is designed. Keeping the sample at 0.95 to 1.1 ATM absolute and non-condensing protects the sensor and keeps the reading within the stated 0.3% accuracy.

About brand
H2scan is an American maker of solid-state hydrogen sensors and analysers, founded in 2002 and based in Valencia, California. Its first product commercialised a wide-range hydrogen sensor developed at Sandia National Laboratories. H2scan's monitors measure hydrogen directly in process streams, battery rooms and power transformers.
Seven Star LLC lists H2scan hydrogen process analyzers, area monitors and transformer monitors for buyers in Oman and the GCC, and we answer each inquiry against the manufacturer's own datasheet.
