Brand: Magnaflux
Magnaflux ZP-9F Solvent Based Developer Aerosol
Description
A non-aqueous white developer for fluorescent and visible penetrant testing
Magnaflux ZP-9F is a solvent-based, non-aqueous developer made of organic particles and used most often from aerosol cans. After the surface penetrant has been removed and the part dried, the developer draws penetrant out of surface-breaking defects and leaves an opaque white coating, giving a contrasting background for both fluorescent and visible penetrant processes.
The data sheet lists a wide group of uses: welds, castings, forgings, leak testing, pressure vessels, aircraft, marine, construction, maintenance, petroleum pipelines, power plant components and general metalwork in automotive, off-highway and farm equipment. ZP-9F is listed on the QPL SAE AMS 2644 Qualified Product List.
Benefits stated by the manufacturer
- Excellent background contrast
- Fast drying
- Thin opaque coating that masks surface blemishes
- NPE-free
- Applicable to cracks, seams and porosity open to the surface

Derived value: at the printed coverage, a typical 12-can case is sold by can count, not by volume, so quote the case part number rather than a gallon figure.
Application instructions from the data sheet
The sheet is specific about how to use ZP-9F. Apply by spray only, because dipping or brushing causes excessive solvent action on the penetrant in discontinuities. Agitate the container during use so that the developer particles stay in suspension. Apply the developer after the surface penetrant has been removed and the part has been dried.
Coverage must be complete, and the layer should be thin and even, just wetting the surface. A heavy spray causes excessive bleeding and running of indications, while too light a spray slows indication development and can reduce sensitivity because there is too little solvent action.
Selection guide: when to choose ZP-9F
Choose ZP-9F for a Zyglo penetrant system where an aerosol developer is convenient: spot inspections, weld checks and small production runs. It pairs with fluorescent penetrants such as ZL-60D and ZL-67, though the data sheet lists the developer on its own, so confirm the combination against your procedure. If a visible red-dye system is preferred, the Spotcheck SKD-S2 developer is the matching option in that family. Magnaflux does not list a bulk pack for ZP-9F in this data sheet.
Where it is used
Typical GCC uses include weld and branch-connection checks on pipelines and pressure vessels during turnarounds, repair welds on rotating equipment, and routine maintenance checks in workshops. The thin white film also helps in bright or dusty conditions where contrast is otherwise hard to judge.
ZP-9F compared with Spotcheck SKD-S2
Both are non-aqueous solvent-based developers with the same use and storage temperature ranges and the same spray-only instruction. The printed differences are summarised here from the two data sheets.
| Property | ZP-9F | SKD-S2 |
|---|---|---|
| Density | 6.5 lb/gal (780 g/L) | 7.5 lb/gal (870 g/L) bulk |
| Coverage per gallon | 800 sq ft (74 sq m) | 800 sq ft (74 sq m) |
| Packs listed | Aerosol, case of 12 | Aerosol, 1 gal jug, 5 gal pail, 55 gal drum |
| Penetrant family | Zyglo | Spotcheck |
The choice is therefore mainly about the penetrant system and the pack size you need. A bulk developer in a jug or pail can be applied with a conventional spray gun, while ZP-9F is an aerosol for convenience in the field.
Handling and storage of ZP-9F aerosols
The sheet gives a storage range of 10 to 30 C and a usage range of 5 to 52 C. Aerosol cans should be stored upright, away from heat sources and direct sun, and protected from freezing. In hot Gulf workshops this means keeping the cases in a shaded, ventilated store instead of a vehicle or open yard. Shake the can before use, as the white developer particles settle, and test the spray on a scrap surface so that the first pass on a real part is a thin, even film. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet for flammability, ventilation and disposal advice.
Common problems and how the sheet helps avoid them
Heavy application causes indications to bleed and run, and too light an application slows development. Dipping or brushing is not recommended because it attacks the penetrant in the defect. Contamination of the surface by water or oil before developer is applied also spoils contrast, so the part must be dry. Keeping these three points in the written procedure addresses most of the poor results seen in the field.
What to send with a quotation request
List the part number, the number of cases, the delivery location in Oman or the GCC and any specification the product must be supplied against. If a penetrant, cleaner or UV light is also required, include them so that the full system can be quoted at once.

About brand
Magnaflux is an American maker of non-destructive testing materials and equipment, best known for magnetic particle and liquid penetrant inspection. The company dates from the 1930s in Chicago, where its engineers helped spread magnetic particle crack detection through industry, and it is now a division of Illinois Tool Works (ITW), headquartered in Glenview, Illinois.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Magnaflux consumables and inspection tools for NDT companies, fabrication yards and maintenance workshops in Oman and the GCC.
