ABB FCNA-01 ControlNet Adapter Module for ABB Drives

Description

ControlNet adapter for ABB drives

The FCNA-01 connects ABB drives to Rockwell-style ControlNet networks. ControlNet remains in service in many North American plants, and the module lets an ABB drive be scheduled next to existing controllers.

ControlNet runs at 5 Mbit/s over RG-6 coaxial cable with 75 ohm terminations. The manual explains the segment limits: 250 m with 48 nodes, 1000 m with only two nodes, and up to 5000 m when repeaters are added.

Cabling rules

The manual, issued as revision A in 2014, lists compatibility with ACS355, ACSM1, ACS850 and ACS880 drives. Newer drive families are not listed in that document, so check the module against your drive before ordering.

The module mounts in a drive option slot and is configured by drive parameters plus a node address, with the controller side set up in its engineering software.

Notes for retrofit projects

Because the manual is older than most other ABB option manuals, treat the FCNA-01 mainly as a replacement or extension component for existing ControlNet installations.

Coax cabling needs care: use the specified tap hardware and measure segment length before commissioning.

Selection and planning notes

Because ControlNet is scheduled, the network update time and the number of nodes are fixed during commissioning. A drive added later means re-scheduling the network in the controller software, which is why many retrofit projects plan spare capacity. Check tap spacing, connector quality and the segment terminations first when a node does not appear, since coax faults cause most start-up problems.

Other ABB drives can be reached from AC drives, and a current general-purpose family is described on the ABB ACS580 page. If your controller now supports EtherNet/IP, an Ethernet option may be easier to maintain.

Spares planning is worth a thought for ControlNet sites. The network hardware, taps and cabling are no longer the newest products, so keep a spare adapter and a tested coax tap on the shelf. Document the node address, the schedule file name and the controller revision, and store the drive parameter backup next to them. If the plant migrates to Ethernet later, the same drive can usually accept a different ABB adapter with a changed parameter group, so the investment in the drive itself stays valuable.

Documents and quotation

Seven Star LLC supplies the FCNA-01 on request from Muscat; send the drive type, control program version and the network details, and we reply with availability and lead time. The user manual (3AUA0000141650, revision A) is linked on this page.

Confirm before ordering: drive compatibility, the module revision and EDS file for your controller, the segment length and node count, and whether a newer ABB option now applies.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need

Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.

Facts checked against ABB company filings and published histories of ASEA and Brown, Boveri & Cie, October 2026.
