ABB FDNA-01 DeviceNet Adapter Module for ABB Drives

Description

Connecting an ABB drive to a DeviceNet network

The FDNA-01 is a plug-in fieldbus adapter that lets an ABB drive act as a DeviceNet class 2 slave. Once the module sits in the drive option slot, a DeviceNet master such as a PLC scanner can start and stop the drive, set speed or torque references, read actual values and handle faults over one cable.

ABB’s user manual for the module is revision G and lists the drive families it supports, among them ACS355, ACSM1, ACS380, ACH580, ACQ580, ACS580, ACS850, ACQ810 and ACS880. That makes the adapter a common choice when a plant already runs DeviceNet and new ABB drives must join the existing scanner list.

Profiles, speeds and cabling

Three data rates are available, 125, 250 and 500 kbit/s, and the permitted trunk length falls as the rate rises, up to 1200 m at the slowest setting according to the manual. The module connects through a five-pole screw terminal for 2.5 mm2 conductors, so no special connector is needed on the drive side.

Two profiles are offered: the ODVA AC/DC drive profile for generic scanners and the ABB Drives profile for tighter integration. An EDS file describes the device to the network configuration tool, and the manual explains the I/O assemblies and the parameter mapping.

Installation and start-up

The network supplies 24 V DC at 20 to 50 mA to the module, while the drive provides 3.3 V at 180 to 300 mA. The enclosure rating is IP20, so the adapter relies on the drive housing or the control cabinet for protection. Shielded DeviceNet cable and proper terminations at both bus ends matter more than any parameter setting.

Start-up follows the manual’s sequence: fit the module, set the node address and data rate, activate the fieldbus parameters in the drive control program, then add the EDS file to the scanner. The manual includes example parameter settings per drive family.

Selection and planning notes

DeviceNet projects often start from an existing scanner configuration, so the practical question is what has to change when a new ABB drive is added. Typically you assign a free node address, import the EDS file, pick an input and output assembly size that matches the process data you need and set the same data rate as the rest of the trunk. Keep the cyclic data short; speed reference, control word, status word and one or two actual values cover most pump and conveyor tasks. Parameter access can stay acyclic.

Related drives are listed in AC drives, and the ACS580 family is explained on the ABB ACS580 page. When several adapters are compared, count the cost of bus power, terminators and cable as well as the module itself.

Documents and quotation

Seven Star LLC supplies the FDNA-01 on request from Muscat; send the drive type, control program version and the network details, and we reply with availability and lead time. The user manual (3AFE68573360, revision G) is linked on this page.

Confirm before ordering: the drive family and firmware version you will use, the DeviceNet scanner and its EDS import, the data rate against your trunk length, and whether a newer module revision applies.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need

Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
