ABB RETA-01 Ethernet Adapter Module (Modbus/TCP, EtherNet/IP)

Description

ABB RETA-01 Ethernet adapter module

The ABB RETA-01 is an Ethernet adapter that lets ABB drives talk Modbus/TCP or EtherNet/IP. It is a legacy fieldbus module, mainly relevant for existing ACS550 and ACS800 installations that need a replacement or an extra unit.

Because the module is old, projects often have to match it against current network gear. It uses plain 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, so a standard managed or unmanaged switch normally works, but a modern PLC may need its protocol settings checked. Set the IP address on the DIP switch before power-up, then configure the drive’s communication parameters.

Installation data

The module takes 380 mA at 5 V from the drive through a 34-pin bus connector and has one RJ-45 port. An 8-way DIP switch sets the IP address, and the network can run in bus or star topology with 100 m per segment. Speed is 10 or 100 Mbps and protection is IP20.

Allow for the bus connector orientation and secure the module with its screw. The 100 m segment limit applies from the module to the nearest switch or hub. For a new installation, ask us about newer options so you are not building on a discontinued part.

Order code and drives

RETA is ABB’s Ethernet adapter family and 01 the version. On an ACS550 the module is ordered as option +K466, for example with the ACS550-01 drives. The 2007 manual also mentions the ACS800. For new designs ABB’s newer Ethernet modules, such as the FPBA-01 family, may be easier to source; the industrial communication category lists more.

The same module is sometimes requested for spare stock. If the drive label shows +K466 the module was supplied fitted; a loose RETA-01 is installed in the drive’s option slot and the drive must have a firmware level that recognises it, which the manual explains.

An option module is only useful when it matches both the drive and the network, so send us the drive type code, its firmware level and the controller that will talk to it. Add the required cable length and connector type. With those facts the right module can be confirmed, and the manual attached here helps your engineer check the parameters.

Typical application context

The RETA-01 is used where an ABB drive has to be controlled and monitored by a PLC or control system over Ethernet instead of hard-wired signals. Through Modbus/TCP or EtherNet/IP the controller can send start, stop and speed references to the drive and read back status, actual values and fault information. In plants with many drives on pumps, fans and conveyors, this reduces control wiring in the panel and gives operators a clearer picture of the drive status from the control room.

Today the module is mainly requested for existing ACS550 and ACS800 installations: for replacing a failed module, for adding network control to a drive that so far ran on discrete signals, or for keeping spare units for a fleet of identical drives.

Choosing the protocol and network layout

Select Modbus/TCP or EtherNet/IP according to what the controller supports natively. EtherNet/IP is common with controllers that use that protocol for their I/O, while Modbus/TCP is widely supported by many PLCs, SCADA systems and gateways. Whichever protocol is chosen, the drive parameters and the controller configuration must use the same setting.

Plan the network so that each cable segment stays within the stated maximum length and the module is connected to a suitable switch. Separate the drive network from office traffic where possible, and keep a list of the IP addresses assigned through the DIP switch so that a replacement module can be set up the same way.

Installation and commissioning considerations

Switch off and isolate the drive before fitting the module, observe the connector orientation and secure the module with its screw as described in the manual. Use Ethernet cable suitable for the industrial environment and route it away from motor and power cables. After power-up, set the communication parameters in the drive, then check from the controller that commands and actual values are exchanged correctly. Test the drive’s reaction to a communication loss, so that the machine behaves safely if the network connection is interrupted. The fault tracing section of the manual helps when the link does not come up. Once the connection is stable, document the address, protocol and drive communication parameters together with the controller configuration, so that service staff can repeat the setup quickly in the future.

How to specify your RFQ

State the type code RETA-01, the quantity, and the full type code of the drive in which it will be installed, including any option codes on the label. Tell us the protocol to be used and the make and type of the controller, and say whether the module replaces an installed unit or is intended for spare stock. This information allows the module to be checked against the drive and the network before a quotation is prepared.

Documents and quotation

The attached ABB manual (3AFE64539736) covers the mechanical and electrical installation, the setting of drive parameters and fault tracing. ABB’s product page for this code currently shows no product photo, so this page has none.

Please confirm before ordering: the drive type and firmware, the option slot, the network scanner or PLC and the cable type. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat and confirms current availability and lead time when it quotes.

Ethernet-based control also lets a PC read drive parameters over the network, which helps commissioning. Keep the module firmware, drive firmware and PLC configuration documented together for later service.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need

Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
