ABB FCAN-01 CANopen Adapter Module for ABB Drives

Description

CANopen control for ABB drives

The FCAN-01 is a CANopen adapter for ABB drives. It is used in mobile machinery, packaging lines and other systems where a CANopen master already coordinates drives, encoders and I/O blocks.

The module connects through a nine-pin D-SUB male connector, X1. The manual states that the 120 ohm bus termination is not built in, so the first and last nodes need external terminators, a detail that is often overlooked during commissioning.

Mounting Option slot of the drive

Bus rates and wiring

The manual ties bus length to data rate: 25 m at 1 Mbit/s, 100 m at 500 kbit/s, 250 m at 250 kbit/s, 500 m at 125 kbit/s and 1000 m at 50 kbit/s. Planning the trunk with these limits avoids intermittent communication faults later.

Power comes from the drive, +3.3 V with a maximum of 300 mA. The adapter plugs into a drive option slot and is configured through the fieldbus parameter group of the drive’s control program.

Using the module in practice

Compared with Ethernet options, CANopen gives modest data volume but robust, low-cost wiring and mature tools. If the plant standard is CAN-based, the FCAN-01 keeps the drive on the same bus as the rest of the machine.

Typical steps are fitting the module, wiring CAN high, CAN low and shield to the connector, fitting terminators, setting node ID and bit rate and mapping the process data in the master.

Selection and planning notes

CAN networks are sensitive to topology. Keep stubs short, run the shield continuously and use a single protective earth point for the cable screen. The manual lists the connector pin assignment, so a ready-made cable can be checked with a meter before it is plugged into the module. Remember that every node on the bus must share the same bit rate, and that a changed node ID takes effect only after a restart of the module or a power cycle, as the manual describes.

More drive types are listed in AC drives; for a general-purpose platform see the ABB ACS580 page. Ask us when a CANopen project needs a matching option for a specific control program.

Documents and quotation

Seven Star LLC supplies the FCAN-01 on request from Muscat; send the drive type, control program version and the network details, and we reply with availability and lead time. The user manual (3AFE68615500, revision F) is linked on this page.

Confirm before ordering: supported drive types and firmware, the external termination plan, node ID and bit rate, and the cable length against your chosen data rate.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

ABB company profile

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need

Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
