ABB AI810 S800 I/O Analog Input Module, 8 Channels
Description
The AI810 is an S800 I/O analog input module from ABB, article number 3BSE008516R1. It reads eight unipolar single-ended channels of 0(4) to 20 mA or 0(2) to 10 V with 12-bit resolution, which covers the typical 4 to 20 mA loops of pressure, level and flow transmitters. The channels share one group with a common return and the module is mounted on an S800 termination unit. It is listed under PLC and I/O cards, as is the DI810/DO810 module set.

Supervision, wiring and transmitter supply
Front LEDs show Fault, Run and Warning, and the module reports Module Error, Module Warning and Channel error to the controller. Internal supervision covers the power supply, checksum, watchdog and memory, and a note in the data sheet says live-zero diagnosis must be handled by the field communication interface or controller. Transmitter supply is fused on the extended MTU, TU830 at a maximum of 1 A slow per group, and sensor power distribution is limited to 1 A per connection.
Choosing among the analog input modules
The same data sheet compares the AI810 with the AI815, AI820, AI825, AI830 and AI835. The AI815 adds HART and a plus or minus 15 percent range, the AI820 is a four-channel bipolar differential module with 14-bit resolution, and the AI830 and AI835 take RTD and thermocouple signals. Select the AI810 for plain 0(4) to 20 mA or 0 to 10 V single-ended signals. Check the module keying code, AE for the AI810, against the MTU and the controller communication interface before ordering.
Installing the AI810 on its module termination unit
The AI810 does not wire directly to the field; it plugs onto one of the compatible MTUs listed above, which carries the field terminals and connects the module to the ModuleBus. Mount the MTU on the DIN rail of the S800 station in the position planned in the I/O layout, set the mechanical keys to the AE code for this module type, and then insert the AI810 and lock it in place. The keying prevents a different module type from being fitted to that position later, which protects the field circuits from an incorrect replacement.
Plan the field wiring so that each transmitter loop has a clear path from the terminal to the device, with the common return handled exactly as the MTU documentation shows. Use screened, twisted-pair instrument cable for the analog loops, keep it separate from power and motor cables in the cabinet and in the cable trays, and earth the screens according to the plant’s instrumentation earthing practice so that noise does not enter the measurement.
Commissioning the analog channels
Before connecting live signals, check every loop for continuity and correct polarity, and confirm whether each transmitter is loop-powered from the MTU or supplied separately. In the controller configuration, set the signal range for each channel, define the engineering units and scaling, and enable the channel diagnostics the system offers. Then inject known values with a loop calibrator at the low end, mid point and top of the range and compare the readings in the control system. Record the results for each tag as part of the loop check sheets, and check that the Run LED is lit and that no Warning or Fault LED remains on once the module is in operation.
Cabinet environment in Oman and the Gulf
S800 stations in Oman and other GCC sites are often installed in field cabinets or remote instrument rooms where outside temperatures are high for much of the year. The module is an IP20 device and relies on the cabinet and the room for protection, and the data sheet sets a lower maximum ambient temperature when compact MTUs are mounted on a vertical rail. Measure the temperature inside the cabinet during the hottest part of the day, not only at commissioning. Keep cabinet doors closed, maintain the air conditioning or filtered ventilation, and replace fan filters regularly in dusty locations. In humid coastal areas, look for condensation on cold surfaces after air-conditioning cycles, and seal cable entries so that dust and moist air cannot enter.
Maintenance and fault finding
During routine visits, review the module and channel status reported to the controller, and investigate any channel error before it affects a control loop. A reading stuck at the bottom of the range usually points to an open loop or a failed transmitter, while a noisy value suggests a screening or earthing problem. Compare a sample of channels against a calibrator at planned intervals. When replacing a module, check the article number and keying before insertion and verify the channel readings again afterwards.

About brand
ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
