Compact ATEX actuator for dampers and small valves

The Schischek ExMax-S-3P is the base datasheet of the size S ExMax quarter-turn actuator line: on-off or 3-position control, a universal 24 to 240 VAC/DC supply and 95 degrees of rotation including 5 degrees of pretension. It is built for safety, control and shut-off dampers, VAV systems, ball valves and throttle valves in explosion-hazard areas of chemical, pharmaceutical, industrial and offshore or onshore plants. The datasheet is now published by Rotork, whose logo it carries, and Schischek is a Rotork brand.

Choosing the right ExMax-S variant

Torque is set on site, so a 5.10 unit can be used at 5 or 10 Nm and a 15.30 unit at 15 or 30 Nm. Pick the -F type when the damper must move to a safe position on loss of supply, and the -S or -SF suffix when end-position signals are needed. The sibling datasheets of this line cover the Ex-i tripping circuit (BF), 4-20 mA control (CY), fast spring return (F1), multi-turn (R) and modulating (Y) versions.

Parameters at delivery are 5 Nm and 30 s per 90 degrees for the 5.10 types and 15 Nm and 30 s for the 15.30 types. A shaft clamp, shaft reducers, a stainless steel weather shield, a hand override and Ex-e terminal boxes are listed accessories.

What to confirm before ordering

Specify the full type code including suffix and coating option, torque, running time, supply voltage and the zone and temperature class of the installation. The datasheet states that connections in hazardous areas need an Ex-e terminal box, so list one if the design calls for it. Check shaft size and travel against the damper or valve. The ExMax line is ATEX tested for zones 1, 2, 21 and 22 and comes in a size S housing (5 to 30 Nm) and a size M housing (24 to 150 Nm). The RedMax line shares the size M housing but is tested for zone 2 and zone 22 locations. Versions on this page include 3-position and on-off drives, spring return actuators, the BF type with an Ex-i tripping circuit for fire damper temperature triggers, 4 to 20 mA and modulating Y types with feedback, and a multi-turn type.
