Biffi ICON2000 Electric Multi-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

The Biffi ICON2000 is an electronically configurable electric actuator for quarter-turn and multi-turn valves, designed for on/off or modulating operation in heavy industrial, chemical and petrochemical plants. Biffi built it around a hollow output shaft, a worm gear reduction and non-contact internal sensors, and it became a common fixture on pipeline, refinery and water valves. Biffi now lists the ICON2000 among its discontinued products, and the current ICON-family actuator is the ICON3000.

That status makes the Biffi ICON2000 mainly a replacement and installed-base item. Seven Star LLC helps Omani and GCC operators who still run ICON2000 units by checking nameplate data against the Biffi datasheet, quoting like-for-like replacement or upgrade options, and offering engineering support from Muscat. Where a plant prefers to move to current equipment, we can also quote the newer Biffi F02 electric quarter-turn actuator or an ICON3000 for multi-turn duty.

Operating Principle

An electric motor drives a worm shaft that turns a bronze worm wheel connected to a hollow output shaft. The output shaft transmits torque to the valve stem nut, while a thrust base carries axial loads when the stem rises. Torque is measured without strain gauges: the actuator derives it from motor speed and load behaviour, compensated for supply voltage and temperature, and reports it to a resolution of 1 percent of nominal.

Position comes from a contactless encoder, and an on-board electronic card monitors the system continuously. It corrects phase sequence automatically, protects against jammed valves, water hammer and instant reversal, and inhibits commands when it detects contactor failure or over-torque. A torque alarm bypass lets the actuator break a stuck valve free before normal torque limits apply again.

Engineering Design of the Biffi ICON2000

The Biffi ICON2000 housing is a corrosion-resistant aluminium alloy with double-sealed covers and a single terminal block holding 55 terminals for power and control. Three NPT cable entries are standard, with a fourth optional. Enclosures are available waterproof to IP68 or NEMA 4, 4X and 6, or explosionproof to Ex-d IIB T4, with higher explosionproof classifications available.

Commissioning is non-intrusive. Settings are made either through the integral push-button panel or wirelessly from a PDA over a Bluetooth link, and the display offers eight language options. Opto-coupled remote controls allow 4, 3 or 2-wire operation, and configurable voltage-free latching relays report status and alarms. A bus interface card adds Lonworks, Profibus, Foundation Fieldbus, Modbus or HART communication.

Key Features

The Biffi ICON2000 earned its reputation through diagnostics and robustness. Main features include:

  • Five frame sizes covering a torque output range from 30 to 334,000 Nm in the Biffi datasheet.
  • Speed range from 12 to 173 RPM at 50 or 60 Hz, with duty ratings from S2-15 minutes to S4-50 percent.
  • Power from 208 to 690 V three-phase, 110 to 240 V single-phase or 24 to 110 V DC.
  • Digital contactless torque and position sensing with advanced maintenance and alarm reports.
  • Configurable data logger in recorder or event mode, with torque signature comparison for valve condition monitoring.
  • Bluetooth wireless connectivity, with watertight and explosionproof PDAs available.
  • Standard ambient range of -20 to +85°C, with extended temperature versions available.
  • Suitable for SIL 2 applications, and available in a low-power LP version under 1.65 A.

Industrial Applications

Biffi lists offshore platforms, pipelines and storage, refineries, LNG, petrochemicals, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, power generation, mining, water pipelines and water treatment among the ICON2000 industries. In Oman the Biffi ICON2000 is most often met on pipeline block valves, tank farm isolation valves and water transmission valves that have run for many years, and the recorder-mode data log helps maintenance teams judge whether a valve is deteriorating.

For these installed-base cases, the practical questions are availability of spare parts, compatibility of the electronic card with an existing control system, and the effort needed to move to a successor. Seven Star LLC reviews your actuator nameplate, the valve torque and the control philosophy, and quotes a replacement path. A valve that needs a fail-safe action can be paired with a spring-return option such as the Biffi ALGAS spring-return pneumatic actuator during a wider upgrade.

Documents and Ordering Notes

The attached file is the Biffi technical data sheet for the ICON2000 v4 series, and it contains the torque tables, component parts list and dimensions. Because Biffi lists the model as discontinued, availability of complete units is not assured, and we confirm whether a unit, a spare card or a replacement is the right route when you send the nameplate details.

Why Choose Seven Star LLC for Biffi ICON2000 Support

Replacing or maintaining an older actuator is easier when the nameplate is read correctly. With each Biffi ICON2000 enquiry, Seven Star LLC asks for the serial number, voltage, torque, speed and option codes, and compares them with the Biffi datasheet to decide whether a spare part, a repair route or a successor is the sensible answer. Because the Biffi ICON2000 sits inside an existing control scheme, we also review the remote wiring and bus type so that a replacement does not force a wider control-system change.

About brand
Pipeline and wellhead valves in the oil and gas industry are often moved by a Biffi actuator. The company was founded in 1955 at Fiorenzuola d'Arda, Italy, and builds pneumatic, hydraulic, electro-hydraulic and electric actuators for on-off and shutdown valves. Seven Star LLC lists Biffi quarter-turn actuators across these operating media and supplies them to valve automation shops and operators in Oman, sized from the valve torque data.

Biffi actuator series on this page

The series names follow a logic that helps when reading a tag. ALGA is the pneumatic quarter-turn actuator and ALGAS its spring-return version. OLGA-H is the hydraulic quarter-turn actuator and OLGAS-H the fail-safe hydraulic version with spring. In the compact rack-and-pinion group, RPD and RPS are the double-acting and spring-return pneumatic pair, and RPHD and RPHS are their hydraulic counterparts. The F01 and F02 are electric quarter-turn actuators; the manufacturer now names the Bettis SCE300 as the replacement for the F02. In each pair the S marks the model that returns to a safe position by spring.

Where Biffi actuators are used

Typical duties are emergency shutdown and blowdown valves, pipeline block valves, wellhead and manifold valves, tank farm isolation and large ball valves at compressor and metering stations. Spring-return models are chosen for fail-safe service. Hydraulic and electro-hydraulic units appear where instrument air is not on hand, as on remote GCC pipeline stations.

Ordering Biffi actuators: what we need

Actuators are sized, so the valve data comes first: valve type and size, the torque curve or at least break, run and end torques, the safety factor in your specification and the stem and mounting flange dimensions. Then the supply: minimum and maximum air or oil pressure, or voltage for electric units. State the fail action, stroking time, ambient temperature and the control accessories required. For an existing actuator send the model and serial number from the nameplate.
