AMETEK Western Research 931 Single-Gas H2S Analyzer

Description

The AMETEK Western Research 931 is a rugged, explosion-proof single-component photometric analyzer that measures one UV-absorbing gas species, most often hydrogen sulfide (H2S). It is a hot-wet design: the sample cell sits in a heated oven so that hydrocarbons and water do not condense in the optics, and a fully integrated sample system controls the dew point without the risk of plugging, contaminating or flooding the analyzer.

Seven Star LLC supplies the 931 from Muscat for sulfur recovery, gas treating and sour gas pipeline duties, with the manufacturer data sheet and application questions handled before quotation.

A fixed-optics UV photometer built for sour gas duties

Instead of a filter or chopper wheel that alternates between measure and reference wavelengths, the 931 uses a fixed optical configuration with pulsed UV lamps. AMETEK states that this raises light throughput, lowers noise and reduces maintenance. The lamps are high-intensity, low-energy hollow cathode sources that emit at precise wavelengths, giving a resolution better than 0.02 nm and a linearity with less than 1 percent deviation over three to four orders of magnitude.

The standard configuration measures H2S. Because some process species do not absorb in the ultraviolet, a thermal conductivity detector (TCD) can be added for hydrogen (H2), and the UV channel can alternatively be configured for sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbonyl sulfide (COS), carbon disulfide (CS2) or ammonia (NH3). The data sheet also lists CO2 among other measurements available.

  • No moving parts in the optical path, with pulsed UV lamps instead of a chopper wheel
  • Heated cell oven and integrated sample system for hot-wet service
  • Optional Heated Acid Gas Probe (HAG) allowing the sample to be returned to the process
  • Stream-switching capability and minimal span drift

Where the 931 is used and what to confirm before ordering

AMETEK lists amine-based tail gas treating (with the optional H2 channel), sulfur recovery unit feed gas analysis, well head gas and sour gas pipelines as the typical applications, in the sulfur recovery, tail gas treating and sour gas pipeline markets.

The 931 is quoted against a stream, not a catalogue number. Before ordering, confirm the component to be measured and its range, the full sample composition including water and hydrocarbons, sample pressure and temperature at the tap, the sample transport arrangement (including whether the heated probe is wanted), area classification and the certificate set required, the outputs and communication needed, and the 120 or 240 VAC supply. For a replacement, send the analyzer serial number and any part numbers from the existing panel.

Documents and quotation

To request a quotation for the 931 analyzer, send Seven Star LLC the full model or order code, quantity, and any nameplate data from an existing unit that is being replaced or matched. Our Muscat team checks the request against the manufacturer document, which can be downloaded from this page, and replies with a formal quotation. Prices, stock and lead times are confirmed per inquiry.

About brand

Process analyzers for sulfur recovery, moisture and combustion are the AMETEK products most often requested by gas plants and refineries. AMETEK, a US instrument manufacturer founded in 1930 and based in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, sells them under names such as Western Research, Thermox and Drexelbrook. Seven Star LLC lists AMETEK gas analyzers, analyzer spare parts and level transmitters, and sources them for process plants in Oman.

AMETEK analyzers and parts listed

The AMETEK products on this page include:

  • 5100HD and the transportable 5100P: tunable diode laser (TDLAS) analyzers, used for example for moisture in natural gas
  • 3050-OLV: process moisture analyzer, with spare boards such as 305110902S
  • Thermox WDG-V: flue gas oxygen analyzer for combustion control
  • Western Research 900 air demand analyzer and 930 analyzer for H2S in sulfur pits
  • Drexelbrook RCT-1210 RF level transmitter
  • Spare parts: PCB assemblies, a protected gold mirror and hollow cathode lamps

Where AMETEK analyzers are used

The 900 air demand analyzer sits on the tail gas of a Claus sulfur recovery unit and measures H2S and SO2 so the air to the reaction furnace can be trimmed. The 930 watches the vapor space of the sulfur pit. Moisture analyzers such as the 3050-OLV and 5100HD serve gas dehydration, pipeline and LNG feed gas, and the Thermox WDG-V measures excess oxygen on fired heaters and boilers. These duties are common in gas processing and refining across the GCC.

Ordering AMETEK analyzers and spares: what we need

For spare parts, send the AMETEK part number, the analyzer model and its serial number. Boards and optical parts change with analyzer revision, and the serial number lets the build be checked in the manufacturer's records. For a new analyzer we need the stream composition, the component and range to be measured, sample pressure and temperature, area classification, power supply, outputs and whether a sample system or shelter is included. For Drexelbrook level transmitters give the full model number, the probe length and the process material.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the AMETEK 931 measure?
Typically hydrogen sulfide, using a dual-wavelength non-dispersive UV photometer. It can also be configured for SO2, COS, CS2 or NH3, and a TCD option adds hydrogen.
Why is the cell heated?
The 931 is a hot-wet analyzer. The heated cell oven avoids hydrocarbon or water condensation, and the integrated sample system controls the dew point.
What is the standard H2S range?
0 to 4,000 ppm minimum up to 0 to 100 percent maximum. Other components and ranges are available on request.
Does it use a chopper wheel?
No. It uses a fixed optical configuration with pulsed UV lamps, which AMETEK says reduces noise and maintenance.
What power does it need?
120 VAC or 240 VAC, 47 to 63 Hz, with up to 500 W with the heated probe and cell.
