Victron MultiPlus-II GX 48/5000/70-50 Inverter Charger

Description

The Victron MultiPlus-II GX 48/5000/70-50 is a MultiPlus-II inverter charger with a GX device built into the same enclosure. It gives 5000 VA at 48 V with a 70 A charger and a 50 A transfer switch, plus Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, VE.Direct and a BMS-Can port, so a separate Cerbo GX is not needed for monitoring and system control. It suits backup, off-grid and self-consumption systems.

A MultiPlus-II with the GX controller already inside

The integrated GX device runs the Victron remote console and sends data to the free VRM Portal, with alarms by email or push notification. Victron lists an optional 100 A external current sensor so the unit can use PowerControl, PowerAssist and self-consumption optimisation with a grid-parallel layout, and a GX GSM modem is offered where there is no internet. In a power outage the MultiPlus-II disconnects the grid and keeps supplying the loads.

Three models are listed in the datasheet: 24/3000/70-32, 48/3000/35-32 and 48/5000/70-50. They can run in parallel and three-phase configurations through the VE.Bus port, and a programmable relay can signal alarms, undervoltage or start a generator.

GX version or standard MultiPlus-II

Choose the GX version when you want the system controller built in and do not plan to add a Cerbo GX; choose the standard MultiPlus-II when a separate GX device or other monitoring already exists. The GX models have their own manual, and some ratings differ from the standard model, so quote the full name. Plan the AC side (50 A input) and the temperature: output falls to 3000 W at 65 degrees C. The standard unit is the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000/70-50; a larger unit is the Victron Quattro 48/10000/140-100/100. See solar power for more.

Output power in hot conditions

Victron’s datasheet gives the continuous output of the 48/5000/70-50 GX at three ambient temperatures: 4000 W at 25 °C, 3700 W at 40 °C and 3000 W at 65 °C (5000 VA continuous apparent power at 25 °C). Peak power is 9000 W, which helps with motor starting loads such as pumps and air conditioners. For installations in Oman, where plant rooms and containers often exceed 40 °C in summer, it is safer to size the system on the 40 °C figure. The unit operates from −40 to +65 °C with fan-assisted cooling, at up to 95% non-condensing humidity, and the enclosure is IP22, so it should be installed indoors or in a ventilated cabinet.

Charger settings for 48 V batteries

The charger accepts 187 to 265 V AC at 45 to 65 Hz and charges at up to 70 A (up to 25 °C ambient). Default voltages are 57.6 V absorption, 55.2 V float and 52.8 V storage mode. A battery temperature sensor is included. For lithium batteries, the BMS-Can port of the built-in GX device connects to a compatible CAN-bus managed battery; Victron notes this is not a VE.Can port.

Energy saving and protection

  • Zero load power: 18 W; 12 W in AES mode; 2 W in search mode.
  • Transfer switch and maximum AC input current: 50 A, with PowerControl and PowerAssist to limit the input current drawn from a generator or weak grid.
  • Protections: output short circuit, overload, battery voltage too high or too low, temperature too high, 230 V AC on the inverter output, and input voltage ripple too high.
  • Programmable relay for general alarm, DC under-voltage or generator start/stop (AC rating 230 V / 4 A).

The optional 100 A external current sensor (1 m cable) lets the MultiPlus-II optimise self-consumption and, if required, prevent grid feed-in.

Installation and standards

The 48/5000/70-50 GX weighs 31 kg and measures 565 × 323 × 148 mm (h × w × d) in a blue steel enclosure (RAL 5012). The battery connects with M8 bolts and the 230 V AC side with 13 mm² (6 AWG) screw terminals. Victron lists compliance with EN-IEC 60335-1, EN-IEC 60335-2-29, EN-IEC 62109-1 and 62109-2 for safety, EN 55014-1/-2 and the IEC 61000 series for emission and immunity, and IEC 62040-1 for uninterruptible power supplies. For parallel or three-phase systems, only one GX unit is needed, and the VE.Bus port links the units together.
