Waygate Krautkramer USM 100 Ultrasonic Flaw Detector

Description

Overview

The Krautkramer USM 100 is a portable ultrasonic flaw detector from Waygate Technologies, the Baker Hughes inspection business. Waygate describes it as sleek but rugged, with smartphone-like capabilities, a large touch screen and buttons that allow ambidextrous operation, and as a flaw detector built for an interconnected world with remote access, data management and instant reporting. The Krautkramer USM 100 builds on the USM series, and Waygate states that data sets from the earlier USM Go+ and USM 36 are compatible with the new model, which eases the transition for existing users.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Krautkramer USM 100, its probes and accessories to NDT service companies, fabrication yards, refineries, pipeline operators, power plants and inspection departments in Oman and the GCC. Our Muscat team helps select the configuration and transducers for the application, and we provide model selection support from Muscat.

Key Features of the Krautkramer USM 100

  • 7 in. touch screen: 1024 x 600 pixel, glove-compatible display that remains readable in difficult lighting, with left or right-hand operation.
  • Light and rugged: 1.2 kg including two batteries, drop and vibration tested, IP67.
  • Hot-swap batteries: two Li-ion packs, one of which can be exchanged while the instrument runs, for about five hours of operation.
  • Guided calibration: prompted calibration steps for straight and angle beam probes.
  • Advanced data recorder: color-coded grid for thickness readings with A-scan storage for every point.
  • B and C-scan: described by Waygate as an industry first for portable conventional flaw detectors, available as encoded scans on Pro and Digital configurations.
  • Interface gate: third gate usable as IF gate to track the interface echo for water column or flexible wedge inspections.
  • Apps and connectivity: Enrich App for photos, geolocation and annotations; USM 100 PC Live for remote operation from a PC or tablet; Create desktop software for custom inspection apps.

Ultrasonic Performance

The Krautkramer USM 100 pulser offers dual, pulse echo and through-transmission modes, pulse repetition frequencies from 10 to 2000 Hz, transmitter voltage from 50 to 350 V in 10 V steps, pulse width from 40 to 2500 ns in 5 ns steps, and damping of 50 or 400 ohms. The receiver has a frequency response of 0.2 to 30 MHz at −3 dB, 12 band-pass and high-pass filters, 110 dB dynamic range in 0.2 dB steps, a 16-point TCG with 100 dB dynamic range, cross-talk better than 80 dB and signal averaging of 2 to 32 samples. Digitization runs at 100 MHz, or 400 MHz with processing, which Waygate highlights for high-resolution thickness measurement. Sound velocity can be set from 250 to 16000 m/s, the range covers 3 to 27000 mm in steel, and the vertical linearity is within ±2 percent.

Three Krautkramer USM 100 gates support flank, peak, zero crossing, J-flank and first peak measurement modes, with time-of-flight resolution of 2.5 ns. Sizing and evaluation tools include DAC/TCG, DGS, AWS D1.1/D1.5, JISDAC, CNDAC, API 5UE, color leg for beam skip visualization and a square wave pulser, and the instrument complies with ISO 22232-1.

Configurations

Waygate lists three configurations, each with or without an ISO 22232-1 certificate: USM 100 Standard (150M5734 or 150M5734C), USM 100 Pro (150M5735 or 150M5735C) and USM 100 Digital (150M5736 or 150M5736C). The Standard version offers 200 percent A-scan saturation and up to three apps on the device, while Pro and Digital offer 400 percent saturation, unlimited apps and the encoded B and C-scan and interface gate functions. The Digital version adds a subscription digital package for data availability, fleet management, private store and remote collaboration. Choosing the right Krautkramer USM 100 configuration depends on whether the work is mostly manual weld inspection or includes corrosion mapping and encoded scanning.

Applications

  • Weld inspection: guided workflows and ASME and AWS apps for code-compliant inspections.
  • Corrosion: light enough for one-hand use on rope access, with an advanced data recorder for CML readings.
  • Aerospace: Waygate states the instrument is specified in inspection manuals of major OEMs.
  • Railway and forgings: customizable interface and back echo attenuator functions.

Customers already using the Krautkramer USM 36 or the Waygate USM Go+ can move to the newer platform while keeping data compatibility, and the Waygate DM5E thickness gauge remains a simple tool for routine wall thickness checks alongside the flaw detector.

Connectivity and Data

Inputs and outputs of the Krautkramer USM 100 include a Lemo 0S power input, Lemo 00 probe connectors, a 14-pin Lemo 1B interface connector with alarm, analog and trigger outputs plus encoder and start/stop inputs, USB 2.0 Type A (also for a Wi-Fi dongle) and USB 3.0 Type C (also for video output). Internal storage is 32 GB, and the data logger handles up to 3000 x 3000 points including A-scans. With USM 100 PC software, inspection data can be analyzed and reported on a PC without another specialized software package.

Probes, Calibration and Procedures (General Guidance)

The points below are general NDT practice rather than Waygate data. A Krautkramer USM 100 is only as good as the transducer and procedure used with it. Weld inspection of plate and pipe usually calls for angle beam probes and wedges matched to the wall thickness and the code, while corrosion surveys use dual element probes and the data recorder. Calibration blocks traceable to the applicable standard, couplant suited to the surface temperature, and qualified operators are equally important. Before each job, verify the Krautkramer USM 100 setup against a reference block, record instrument and probe serial numbers in the report, and store the setup file so the inspection can be repeated in the same way at the next outage. Periodic instrument verification to ISO 22232-1 is commonly required by inspection contracts in the region.

About brand

Ultrasonic inspectors usually call these instruments Krautkramer, the name that Waygate Technologies still places on its flaw detectors and thickness gauges. The company makes non-destructive testing and inspection equipment. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Waygate ultrasonic flaw detectors and thickness gauges for inspection companies, fabricators and plant integrity teams in Oman. Earlier units of the same families carry GE Inspection Technologies labels, which helps when identifying an older instrument.

Waygate Krautkramer instruments listed here

Two portable flaw detectors are listed: the Krautkramer USM 36 and the lighter USM Go+. For wall thickness there are the DM5E corrosion thickness gauge, which works with dual-element probes on pipes, vessels and tanks, and the Krautkramer CL Go+ precision thickness gauge. These Waygate NDT instruments are used for weld inspection, corrosion surveys and incoming material checks.

Ordering Waygate NDT equipment: what we need

Name the instrument and the exact version or software options, since each model is sold in several configurations, for example the DM5E with or without data logger. List the probes with frequency, element size and connector type, plus cables, calibration blocks, wedges and couplant. State the material, thickness range, surface temperature and the test standard you work to. For accessories or spares for an instrument you already own, send its serial number. We quote throughout the GCC.
