E2S GNExCP7-BG Explosion-Proof Break Glass Manual Call Point

Overview

The E2S GNExCP7-BG is an explosion-proof Ex d break glass manual call point that combines a corrosion-proof GRP enclosure with a 316 stainless steel operating mechanism and IP66/67/68 ingress protection. It is approved to IECEx, ATEX, UL and cUL standards for Zone 1, 2, 21 and 22 and Class I/II Division 2 installations, and an F version can be specified where compliance with UL38 (manual signaling boxes for fire alarm systems) or ULC-S528 is required. The E2S GNExCP7-BG gives personnel a simple, reliable way to raise a fire or emergency alarm by hand in areas where flammable gas or combustible dust may be present.

Working Principle

A break glass call point holds a switch in its normal state by pressure from a frangible glass element. When an operator breaks the glass on the E2S GNExCP7-BG, the internal 316 stainless steel mechanism is released and changes over a sealed IP67 micro switch, which signals the alarm condition to the control panel. A test key (SP70-0040) allows the device to be tested without breaking the element, and spare glasses are supplied in boxes of 50 (SP70-0001), which keeps routine function testing quick and inexpensive.

The switch is available as a single-pole changeover (SPCO/SPDT) or double-pole changeover (DPCO/DPDT). Conventional fire panels normally supervise the circuit using end-of-line and series resistors or Zener diodes, and the E2S GNExCP7-BG can be ordered with these components factory fitted on its dedicated termination board. For addressable systems, versions are offered with interface modules from Honeywell, Ziton, Johnson Controls, Hochiki, Apollo, Consilium, Siemens, Securiton and Simplex, so the call point reports directly on the panel loop.

Engineering Design of the E2S GNExCP7-BG

The enclosure of the E2S GNExCP7-BG is anti-static, UV-stable GRP, rated IP66/67/68 to EN/IEC 60529 and Type 4/4X/3R/13 to UL50E/NEMA 250. Standard colour is red, with blue, green, yellow, black, magenta and striped colour combinations available for non-fire functions such as emergency shutdown or general alarm. An optional 316 stainless steel lift flap protects the glass against accidental operation, and an optional LED indicator can show the alarm status locally. The unit weighs about 2.1 kg.

Three M20 x 1.5 cable entries are provided, two facing down and one on the side, and the back box can be rotated to give two top-facing entries instead. Adaptors convert the entries to 1/2″ NPT, 3/4″ NPT or M25, and two stopping plugs are included. Inside, installers can choose DIN rail terminals (8 x SAK2.5) or the E2S termination board with six 2.5 mm² terminals plus four dedicated EOL and series terminals. An external M5 earth stud is fitted. Electrical limits are 250 V AC at 3.33 A, 48 V DC at 1.0 A and 24 V DC at 3.0 A.

An order code is assembled from GNExCP7BG, the switch type (S or D), terminals (D for DIN rail, P for termination board or X for an addressable module), lift flap (N or L), cable entry option, stopping plug material, duty label and tag option, product version (A for UL, cUL, IECEx, ATEX, INMETRO and PESO, F for UL38 and ULC-S528 fire use, or a letter for the chosen addressable module), wiring option, enclosure colour, LED option and optional EOL and series modules such as E470R or S5V1Z. Note that the F version requires a red enclosure and a FIRE/FEU duty label and is not offered with the LED indicator.
