Bently Nevada 3300 XL 8mm Proximity Transducer System
Description
Overview
The Bently Nevada 3300 XL 8mm Proximity Transducer System is a complete non-contacting vibration and position measurement solution consisting of a 3300 XL 8 mm probe, a matching 3300 XL extension cable, and a 3300 XL Proximitor sensor. The system generates an output voltage directly proportional to the distance between the probe tip and the observed conductive shaft surface, enabling accurate static position and dynamic vibration measurement on fluid-film bearing machines such as turbines, centrifugal compressors and large electric motors. The standard 3300 XL 8 mm 5-meter system fully complies with American Petroleum Institute API 670 requirements for mechanical configuration, linear range, accuracy and temperature stability, and every component is fully interchangeable with other 3300 XL 8 mm systems without the need for individual bench calibration.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Bently Nevada 3300 XL 8mm Proximity Transducer System to rotating equipment reliability teams across Oman and the wider GCC. From gas turbine trains in Muscat’s power generation plants to centrifugal compressors in Sohar’s petrochemical complexes, we supply probes, extension cables and Proximitor sensors on request to help keep machinery protection systems fully populated and API 670 compliant.
Measurement Principle
The Bently Nevada 3300 XL 8mm system operates on the eddy current sensing principle. The Proximitor sensor drives a radio-frequency oscillator signal through the probe coil, generating a high-frequency electromagnetic field at the probe tip. When a conductive target – typically the machine shaft – enters this field, eddy currents are induced in the target’s surface, which in turn draws energy from the oscillator circuit in direct proportion to the gap distance between the probe tip and the target. The Proximitor sensor demodulates this energy loss into a DC output voltage with a linear scale factor of 7.87 V/mm (200 mV/mil) across an 80-mil linear range, giving both a static gap voltage for shaft centerline position and a dynamic AC component for radial vibration amplitude.
Because the measurement is entirely non-contacting, the 3300 XL system introduces no mechanical loading or wear on the observed shaft and delivers a continuous, high-bandwidth signal from DC up to 10 kHz, suitable for both slow-roll position monitoring and high-frequency vibration analysis. The system also supports Keyphasor reference and rotational speed measurement when the probe is targeted at a shaft keyway or notch, making it a single transducer platform for position, vibration and speed on the same rotating asset.
Engineering Design of the Bently Nevada 3300 XL
The Bently Nevada 3300 XL 8mm probe uses a patented TipLoc molding method that bonds the probe tip more robustly to the probe body, while the CableLoc cable termination design provides 330 N (75 lbf) of pull strength at the probe-to-case junction. Probe, extension cable and Proximitor sensor connect through corrosion-resistant, gold-plated ClickLoc connectors that require only finger-tight torque and audibly click when properly seated, eliminating the loose connections that plague older screw-type terminations. The Proximitor sensor itself is housed in a compact package suitable for high-density DIN-rail installation or traditional four-hole panel mounting, and its improved RFI/EMI immunity satisfies European CE mark approvals without requiring shielded conduit or metallic housings.
SpringLoc terminal strips on the Proximitor sensor allow tool-free, vibration-resistant field wiring connections, and an optional FluidLoc cable variant prevents turbine oil and other process liquids from wicking through the cable interior into the monitoring system. Extended Temperature Range (ETR) probe and cable variants extend operation up to 218°C at the probe tip and 260°C along the cable run for applications inside hot bearing housings, while intrinsically safe (ia) and non-incendive (nA, ec) certified variants under ATEX, IECEx and cNRTLus approvals extend the system into classified hazardous areas.

Industrial Applications
The Bently Nevada 3300 XL system remains the benchmark for eddy current monitoring across the region. The Bently Nevada 3300 XL 8mm system is the standard proximity transducer platform for machinery protection on critical rotating equipment throughout Oman’s oil, gas and power generation sectors. Gas turbine and centrifugal compressor trains on LNG trains and gas processing facilities rely on the 3300 XL for radial vibration and axial thrust position monitoring feeding directly into machinery protection systems, while power generation operators use the system on steam turbine-generator sets to satisfy API 670 requirements for turbine supervisory instrumentation. Large electric motors and pumps in water treatment and desalination plants also use the 3300 XL 8mm system where fluid-film bearings require continuous shaft position and vibration surveillance.
Seven Star LLC supplies the 3300 XL 8mm system to reliability engineering teams across Oman and the GCC, supporting new machinery protection system installations as well as spares provisioning for existing 3300 series populations in the Sohar and Salalah industrial and free zones. We supply standard and Extended Temperature Range probes, cables and Proximitor sensors on request to support plant maintenance teams in Muscat and beyond when a transducer requires replacement.

A proximity probe measures the gap to the shaft, so it sees shaft movement inside a fluid-film bearing directly. A velocity or acceleration sensor sits on the casing and suits rolling-element bearing machines. Critical turbomachinery usually carries two X-Y probes per bearing, two axial probes for thrust position and a Keyphasor probe for speed and phase.
Where Bently Nevada systems are used
In Oman and the GCC, Bently Nevada racks and probes protect gas turbines, compressors and steam turbines in gas processing, LNG, refining, petrochemical, power and desalination plants. Many installations are 3500 racks that have run for years, so most requests are for like-for-like module, probe, extension cable and proximitor replacements, plus upgrades to newer monitors.
Ordering and replacement: what we need
For probes and proximitors, send the full part number with all option digits (for example 330101-00-27-10-02-05). The digits set the probe length, cable length, connector and approvals, and the probe, cable and proximitor must match in total system length. For 3500 modules, send the module and I/O part numbers from the rack and say whether the I/O is internal or external termination, or barrier type. If a module is obsolete, we quote the replacement that Bently Nevada names and point out any configuration or firmware change.

FAQ
Questions about the Bently Nevada 3300 XL 8mm Proximity Transducer
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What does the 3300 XL 8mm Proximity Transducer System measure?
The system measures both static shaft position and dynamic radial vibration on fluid-film bearing machines, and can also be used for Keyphasor reference and rotational speed measurement when targeted at a shaft keyway.
02Does the system reduce installation and spares complexity?
Yes. All 3300 XL 8mm probes, extension cables and Proximitor sensors are fully interchangeable without individual bench calibration, so plants can stock common spares rather than matched, factory-calibrated sets, reducing both spares inventory and installation time.
03What thread and cable length options are available?
Probes are available with 3/8-24 UNF or M10 x 1 threads, in 1, 5 or 9-meter system lengths, and with standard or Extended Temperature Range (ETR) cable rated up to 260 degrees C for hot bearing housing applications.
04Is the 3300 XL compatible with older 3300 series transducer systems?
Yes, 3300 XL 8mm components are electrically and physically interchangeable with non-XL 3300 series 5mm and 8mm components, though mixing XL and non-XL components limits performance to non-XL specifications.
05Is Seven Star LLC an experienced supply partner for Bently Nevada products?
Yes, Seven Star LLC is an experienced supplier of Bently Nevada in Oman and the GCC, supplying proximity transducer systems on request, with lead time confirmed at quotation.
