Bently Nevada 3500/92 Communication Gateway Module
Overview
The Bently Nevada 3500/92 Communication Gateway is the 3500 rack module that hands machinery protection data to the rest of the plant. It provides communication of all rack monitored values and statuses to process control and automation systems over Ethernet TCP/IP and serial RS232, RS422 or RS485 links, and it also allows the 3500 Rack Configuration Software and Data Acquisition Software to reach the rack over Ethernet. With the Bently Nevada 3500/92 installed, a DCS, PLC or HMI can display vibration, position, temperature and alarm status from the protection rack without hard-wiring every value as a 4 to 20 mA signal.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Bently Nevada 3500/92, its four I/O module variants, cables and accessories to plants in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. The manufacturer datasheet (141542 Rev. N) is attached to this page, and our engineers can help select the I/O module and cabling that match the host system.
Operating Principle
Inside the rack, the Bently Nevada 3500/92 collects data from the other modules over a high-speed internal network: current measured values with time stamp, module statuses and current alarm statuses. The exact data returned depends on each module type and its channel configuration. The collection rate depends on the rack configuration but will not exceed 1 second for all modules in the 3500 rack, which is fast enough for operator displays, historian trends and alarm annunciation in the control room. Protective action itself remains in the monitors and relay modules, so the gateway does not sit in the trip path.
On the host side three protocols are supported. Modicon Modbus, based on the AEG Modicon PI-MBUS-300 reference and using RTU transmission mode, runs over the serial ports. Modbus/TCP, the TCP/IP variant of Modbus, runs over Ethernet. A proprietary Bently Nevada host protocol over Ethernet TCP/IP links the rack to the configuration and data acquisition software. The Ethernet link is 10 Mbps, conforms to IEEE 802.3 and uses an RJ45 connection for 10BASE-T star networks. The Bently Nevada 3500/92 keeps the interfaces and features of the original 3500/90, except the primary value Modbus registers; their function is now provided by a Configurable Modbus Register Utility.
Engineering Design of the Bently Nevada 3500/92
The Bently Nevada 3500/92 occupies one full-height front slot and one full-height rear slot. The main board measures 241 × 24.4 × 242 mm and weighs 0.82 kg, and its front panel carries OK and TX/RX LEDs that show the module is healthy and communicating with the other modules in the rack. The rear I/O module, 99.1 mm deep and 0.44 kg, defines the physical ports: Modbus RS232/RS422, Modbus RS485, Ethernet with RS232 Modbus, or Ethernet with RS485 Modbus. Typical power consumption is 5.0 W with the RS232/RS422 I/O module and 5.6 W with the RS485 module.
Serial runs can be long: the datasheet gives a total RS485 cable run of up to 4000 feet (1220 m), and RS422 runs of up to 4000 feet between racks, which allows several racks in a compressor house or turbine hall to share one host link. RS422 cables can be used for rack-to-rack connections with Modbus RS485 I/O modules, while the final rack-to-host connection is application specific. Older gateway modules need firmware upgrade kit 126M4118-01 to communicate with a new I/O module; the Ethernet I/O spares already include it.
Key Features
The Bently Nevada 3500/92 brings the following capabilities to a 3500 rack, as listed in its datasheet:
- Access to all rack monitored values, module statuses and alarm statuses with time stamps.
- Modbus RTU over RS232, RS422 or RS485, based on the Modicon PI-MBUS-300 reference.
- Modbus/TCP over 10 Mbps Ethernet with an RJ45 10BASE-T connection.
- Ethernet access for 3500 Rack Configuration Software and Data Acquisition Software.
- Data collection from all modules in the rack within 1 second or less.
- Configurable Modbus Register Utility for mapping the values the host needs.
- Four I/O module variants to match serial-only or Ethernet-plus-serial host connections.
- DNV GL and ABS marine classification, with cNRTLus, ATEX and IECEx approval options.
Industrial Applications
Most 3500 racks in Oman protect critical machines that are run from a central control room: gas turbine generators at independent power plants, compressor trains at gas processing plants, and large pumps and blowers in refineries and fertiliser plants. The Bently Nevada 3500/92 is the usual way to bring the rack’s overall vibration, position and temperature values into the DCS or a PLC-based unit control panel, so operators can see trends and pre-alarms on the same screens as process data. Modbus/TCP suits modern Ethernet control networks, while RS485 and RS422 links remain common on older Modbus serial infrastructure.
The gateway sits beside other communication and data modules such as the Bently Nevada 3500/22M Transient Data Interface, which feeds waveform data to condition monitoring software, and draws power from the rack’s 3500/15 AC/DC Power Supply Module. An overview of the rack architecture is on our Bently Nevada 3500 Machinery Protection System page. Seven Star LLC helps plants in Oman and the GCC choose the I/O option, cables and converters for the Bently Nevada 3500/92 and plan the Modbus register map.
