The Viking VK500 is a fast response, fusible element ESFR pendent sprinkler with a nominal K-factor of 14.0 (202 metric). A special deflector produces large, high-momentum droplets in a hemispheric pattern, so water can penetrate the plume of a severe fire and wet the burning surface instead of only cooling the air above it. Viking states that the model has been available since 2000, which makes it the long-established K14 choice in the ESFR range.

Viking lists it for palletized and solid-pile storage and for single-row, double-row, multiple-row and portable open-rack storage without open-top containers or solid shelves. Typical commodities named in the datasheet are Class I to IV, cartoned and uncartoned unexpanded plastics and cartoned or uncartoned expanded plastics, with some arrangements of rolled paper, aerosols and rubber tires also covered where the standards allow.

Technical specifications

The datasheet lists base part numbers 27393A, 10284A and 21360A, each with a “-TQ” version fitted with a protective cap for InstaSeal fittings. Some of these part numbers are marked limited availability.

Ordering code and design limits

Viking builds the order code in three steps: choose the base part number for the thread and approval, add the finish suffix, then add the temperature suffix. For example, 27393AC is a VK500 in brass finish with the 165 °F (74 °C) element, for areas up to 100 °F (38 °C). A 205 °F element is ordered with the E suffix and is intended for ceilings up to 150 °F (66 °C).

For layout, the UL column of Viking Table 3 gives 8 to 10 ft spacing in buildings over 30 ft high, a deflector 6 to 14 in below the ceiling and at least 36 in above the top of storage.
