Description
An ESFR sprinkler for freezers and other unheated storage
The Viking VK512 is an ESFR dry pendent sprinkler: a K25.2 (363 metric) fast response fusible element head permanently secured to a special supply nipple. Viking designed it for storage areas subject to freezing that are supplied from a wet system in an adjacent heated area, so the water stays on the warm side of the wall or ceiling and only the sealed barrel and head reach into the cold space. Viking states it has been available since 2022.
The assembly has a sealed brass inlet with a 1-1/2 in grooved connection, and each sprinkler includes two optional insulating boot assemblies. The boots seal the clearance around the barrel to slow air exchange between the cold area and the room above, which Viking says helps limit condensation, humidity and temperature differences that could lead to ice build-up and either block operation or cause premature operation.

Viking states the VK512 can be installed into welded outlets that meet the dimensional requirements of ANSI B16.3 (Class 150).
Ordering and installation notes
The order code is the base part number for length, then the finish suffix, then the temperature suffix. 24853AC is a VK512 at 25-1/2 in with brass finish and a 165 °F (74 °C) element, for rooms up to 100 °F (38 °C). Viking recommends temporarily assembling all components before final installation to check the measurements, and installing the boots on smooth, flat, clean surfaces. For corrugated ceiling panels and similar situations other penetration sealing methods may be needed.
Under FM, the VK512 is installed in accordance with FM Global Data Sheets 2-0 and 8-9. Wet pipe systems must be provided with adequate heat.
