Viking Model VNR Wide-Range Foam Proportioner, 6 in and 8 in

Description

A wide-range proportioner for foam-water sprinkler risers

The Viking Model VNR wide-range proportioner proportions foam concentrate into a water stream accurately over a wide range of system flow rates. It is configured for a 3 percent ratio. Viking points out that it can proportion correctly at the low flows seen when only a few sprinklers have operated. The designer must still make sure the system flow demand stays within the proportioner range.

It is one part of an approved foam system whose other main components are the foam concentrate, a storage tank, a concentrate control valve and the foam discharge devices. Please refer to the specific system manual for the full design.

Installation can be horizontal or vertical, with a flow direction indicator on the body, and the unit is for fresh or salt water.

Sizing the proportioner

Viking asks the designer to know the minimum and maximum flow demand of the system. The minimum flow should be above the minimum shown in the data sheet ordering table, and the maximum should be below the table maximum. If both sizes suit, the choice can be based on the riser or supply pipe size. After selecting a size, check the flow graph in section 6.2 of the data sheet to confirm the required flows are possible at the available pressure; otherwise move up one pipe size.

The April 2026 revision updated the maximum flow rates, so always work from the current form.

The data sheet identifies the grooved foam inlet, orifice restrictor, orifice plate, spring, rod, threaded collar, clapper and plug as the main components. The foam inlet is grooved, so a suitable grooved coupling and pipe outside diameter of 76.1 mm or 73.0 mm must be matched when specifying the connection. The unit carries an identification tag plate, and the data sheet gives approximate weights and dimensions so the riser room layout can be checked early in design.

About brand

Viking is an American manufacturer of fire sprinklers, valves and special hazard fire protection systems, based in Michigan. The business grew from the work of Emil Tyden, a Swedish immigrant who made railroad car seals in Hastings, Michigan, and turned to sprinklers after buying the struggling Viking Corporation. By the late 1980s Viking had left contracting and design work to concentrate on manufacturing and distribution.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list selected Viking sprinklers, valves and foam equipment with the manufacturer technical data, for fire protection contractors in Oman and the GCC.

Viking company profile

Origin Hastings, Michigan, USA, where Emil Tyden began making sprinklers and valves
Headquarters Michigan, USA (Viking Group)
Business model Manufacturing and distribution through independent sprinkler contractors
Special hazards Includes the Minimax Fire Products range, sold under the Viking name
Product families ESFR pendent sprinklers such as VK500, VK503, VK506 and VK510 for storage protection, standard and quick-response sprinklers, deluge and preaction valves, dry pipe and alarm check valves, foam and special hazard systems

Milestones

  • 1880s: Emil Tyden starts out making railroad car seals.
  • Early years: Tyden buys Viking Corporation and starts making sprinklers and valves in Hastings.
  • Late 1980s: Viking leaves contracting to focus on manufacturing and distribution.
