A portable calcium carbide acetylene generator for point-of-use welding gas

The Rexarc 50-PS is a portable acetylene generator that makes acetylene on the job in the quantity required, so there are no cylinder costs and no acetylene is left unused in a cylinder. Rexarc notes that up to 15 percent of the acetylene bought in a cylinder can stay in the cylinder with its acetone solvent. The generator operates at any chosen pressure up to 1.05 kg/cm2 (15 psig), and the pressure can be held within close limits.

It is charged with 23 kg of 14ND carbide and 190 litres of water and is rated at 2.8 m3 per hour. Safety features include carbide feeding that stops when generation exceeds demand or the operating lever is closed, a factory-set pressure relief valve, and a safety check and flashback arrester.

Inside the generator

The flyer labels the working parts: a pressure-adjusting screw, operating lever, spring and diaphragm drive an interface arm and feed rod that meter carbide into the water, with a breech lock, tip protector, service outlet valve, safety check, pressure relief valve, outlet pipe, filter, baffles, flashback arrester, agitator, check valve and tank drain valve. Because the feed responds to the diaphragm, generation follows demand.

Applications and points to confirm

The 50-PS suits remote sites and workshops with low acetylene use where cylinder logistics are costly. The Rexarc documents give the gas per charge differently (the flyer says about 7 m3 or 7000 litres, the web page about 2.8 m3), and the shipping weight also differs between sources, so those two values are not relied on here; confirm gas per charge and shipping data with the supplier. Check local rules for generator use, carbide storage and residue disposal before ordering, and train operators on the manufacturer instructions.
