Uniweld H-Style 40A-18 Hand Cutting Torch

Description

A heavy-duty injector hand cutting torch for thick steel

The Uniweld H-Style 40-series hand cutting torch, here the 40A-18, is an injector cutting torch with a heavy-duty ribbed brass handle and stainless steel ball-point valves with Teflon packing. Uniweld lists head angles of 70, 90 and 180 degrees and torch lengths of 18, 21, 36 and 48 inches. All versions use the 6290 tip series and have a stated cutting capacity of 12 inches (about 305 mm).

The torch is supplied with check valves installed. Adding FB to the part number substitutes UL listed flashback arrestors for the check valves, and Uniweld states that both are field replaceable. The injector head mixer is chosen by fuel: acetylene for 40A, 40 and 40B, fuel gas for the F versions and natural gas for the N versions.

Part numbers

The 40A-18 is the 90 degree, 18 in version for acetylene. The full 18 in group and the longer lengths are listed below by letter code: no letter is 70 degrees, A is 90 degrees and B is 180 degrees, with F for fuel gas and N for natural gas.

Part # Head angle Length Weight
40A-18 / 40-18 / 40B-18 90 / 70 / 180 deg 18 in 55 oz
40A-21 / 40-21 / 40B-21 90 / 70 / 180 deg 21 in 59 oz
40A-36 / 40-36 / 40B-36 90 / 70 / 180 deg 36 in 74 oz
40A-48 / 40-48 / 40B-48 90 / 70 / 180 deg 48 in 76 oz

Weights rise with length from 55 oz at 18 in to 76 oz at 48 in. Fuel-gas (F) and natural-gas (N) versions follow the same lengths: 40AF, 40F and 40BF for fuel gas and 40AN and 40N for natural gas, listed in the 18 and 21 inch lengths.

Selecting and setting up

Choose the length for operator distance from the heat: 36 and 48 in versions suit scrap and heavy sections. Pick the head angle for access, remembering that the 40-18 (70 degree) and 40B-18 (180 degree) variants differ only in head angle, and the injector mixer for acetylene, fuel gas or natural gas. Use tips from the 6290 series sized for the plate thickness, seat them firmly by wrench-tightening the nut, and never use tips with damaged seats or plugged holes. The instructions say to connect the green oxygen hose to the right-hand inlet and the red fuel hose to the left-hand inlet, to install torch check valves or arrestors first and to leak test with detergent solution or a water bucket.
