Palmer Wahl DHS520L Heat Spy High Temperature IR Thermometer
Description
A high temperature infrared thermometer with Bluetooth and datalogging
The Palmer Wahl Heat Spy DHS520L is a high-precision portable infrared thermometer for temperatures from 1122 to 5432 F (600 to 3000 C). The datasheet covers two models: the DHS520L1 with one internal eye protection filter and the DHS520L2 with two internal eye protection filters, both with neutral density filters for high temperature applications. The instrument has Bluetooth serial communication, USB, a viewfinder that shows the temperature digitally beside the target, operating and calculating modes, digital output and out-of-range alarms.
The measured temperature is shown in four simultaneous modes, continuous, average, maximum and minimum, and the user chooses which one appears in the viewfinder. Temperature resolution is 1 degree. Sighting uses a clear 9 degree wide-angle field of view with a small, well-defined one-third degree measurement area, and focusing is variable from 1 m to infinity.
Features
- Two-position trigger that takes and stores temperature readings; internal storage of up to 9999 readings with date and time stamp.
- Data logging modes single, latch, burst and route; the specification table lists 9 routes of up to 99 readings each.
- Wireless Bluetooth or USB connection to a PC, laptop or mobile device, with free PC and mobile software for logging, stored data retrieval and route management.
- Spectral response of 1 micrometre with advanced spectral filtering, and emissivity adjustment from 0.10 to 1.20 in 0.01 steps.
- Rugged rubber casing with a protective thermal cover, lens cap, lens protection hood and wrist strap supplied.
- Optional close-up lenses: L-110 with fixed focus at 215 mm (8.5 in) and a minimum target of 0.4 mm, for hot filament or wire observation; L-135 with focus from 450 to 620 mm and a minimum target of 1.8 mm, for calibration on small-aperture furnaces.

Included and optional accessories
Included with the instrument: industrial rubber casing, protective thermal cover, lens cap, lens protection hood, wrist strap, USB cable, one 9 V battery and a user manual. Optional: a waterproof carrying case, close-up lenses, a long eye relief adaptor and a shoulder or neck strap.
Selection and use notes
- Pick the L1 or L2 by the eye protection you need at the target temperature; the datasheet lists the number of internal filters but not a per-temperature rule, so confirm with the maker.
- Set the emissivity to the target material before reading; the adjustable range is 0.10 to 1.20.
- The field of view is 180:1, so the target must fill the measurement spot: for example a 5 mm minimum target at 1 m.
- Use the close-up lenses for small targets, and keep the unit inside 0 to 50 C ambient and IP40 rating, which is not water protected.
- Use route mode to repeat a planned measurement walk and trend the results in the logger software.
- Check the sighting at your working distance, because the one-third degree measurement area defines how small a hot target can be read.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
The datasheet lists glass melt furnaces and tanks, glass containers and pharmaceutical vials, steel coke plants, casting, rolling mills and re-heat furnaces, metal processing such as forging, casting, stamping and cladding, ceramics, heat treatment, petrochemical, refractories and semiconductors. In the Gulf this covers aluminium smelters and rolling, steel and glass plants, and furnace inspection in refineries and heat treatment shops.
When you enquire about the DHS520L, state the target material and expected temperature within 600 to 3000 C, the working distance and target size, and whether you need the L1 or L2 eye protection filter set, so that accessories such as close-up lenses can be proposed.
Selection and installation notes
An infrared thermometer measures the surface it sees, so check the distance-to-spot ratio, the emissivity setting and the temperature range against the target. Keep the lens clean, avoid steam and dust in the line of sight, wear the eye protection the maker recommends when looking at very hot targets and let the instrument adjust to the ambient temperature before use.
Information needed for a quotation
Send the full model code, the quantity, the delivery location in Oman or the GCC, the intended use and any accessories needed, so that the complete package can be quoted together.
Documents and supply information
The manufacturer data sheet is attached to this page and should be read together with the project specification and the site risk assessment before a purchase is confirmed. Ratings, standards and dimensions are quoted as printed on that sheet. Lead time, stock position and certificates available with the shipment are confirmed in the quotation, and we supply to Oman and the wider GCC region for industrial, utility and building services projects.
