A stainless steel bimetal dial thermometer in 3 inch and 5 inch sizes

The Palmer Wahl All Star bimetal thermometer family covers models 3BC and 5BC (fixed centre back connected case), 3A and 5A (all-angle case) and the matching 3BCJ, 5BCJ, 3AJ and 5AJ variants that add an adjustable union fitting. The datasheet describes a polished 316 stainless steel case and bezel, a 304 stainless steel fitting and stem, and a hermetically sealed glass lens held by a cam-action bezel ring with a heat-resistant gasket.

A single helix bimetallic coil, located in the bottom 2.5 inches of the stem, turns the pointer. Ranges below 500 F use a silicone gel coated coil. The sealed case is intended to keep out moisture, so the dial stays clear of fogging or icing and the coil does not freeze up in extreme conditions, according to the datasheet.

Order code and temperature ranges

The ordering guide has four steps: size and case style, stem length (2.5, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 or 24 inch, with 30 to 60 inch special order), temperature range and options. The datasheet example 5BCJ24-40/120F(SPG) is a 5 inch back connected case with adjustable union, 24 inch stem, -40 to 120 F range and shatter-proof glass. Options are (FS) 316 stainless steel fitting and stem, (PC) Plexiglass cover, (SPG) shatter-proof safety glass, and, not with the adjustable union, (1/4NPT), (3/8D), (3/8NPT), (7/8SN) and (1/2NPS) fittings.

Selection and installation

Choose the 5 inch dial when the instrument is read from a distance, and the 3 inch for compact skids.
Choose all-angle (A) when the head must be adjusted to the viewing angle, and fixed centre back connected (BC) for a straight panel or pipe installation.
Add the J adjustable union when stem length cannot be confirmed before ordering.
Keep the operating point in the middle of the scale and stay within the 50 percent over-range allowance only for short swings.
Use a thermowell sized to the stem for metal-to-metal tip contact, as the datasheet recommends.

Selection and installation notes

A thermometer or temperature transmitter is selected from the range, the stem or bulb length, the connection and the ambient conditions. Fit it in a thermowell of the right bore and length so the sensing element reaches the flow, fill the well with heat-transfer paste where the maker advises, keep the cable or case clear of heat and vibration and check the reading against a reference instrument at commissioning and at regular intervals.
