An economy industrial thermometer with an adjustable angle case

The Palmer Wahl 9AL and 9FL economy industrial thermometers are glass-tube thermometers in a 9 inch case, listed in the datasheet as models 9AL, 9FL, 9ALSB and 9FLSB. The case is black-finished extruded aluminium (AL) or tough molded high temperature plastic (FL). The scale is a V-shaped white aluminium plate with bold black lines and numerals, and the datasheet says that the case can be rotated 180 degrees and the stem positioned in 10 degree steps to reach almost any viewing angle.

The datasheet marks the Sky Blue (SB) fill as the environmentally safe choice, a mercury-free blue liquid, and notes that mercury-filled models are being phased out. Sky Blue models are offered in 9 inch cases with stems from 3.5 inch to 12 inch and ranges to 300 F.

Features

• All-angle adjustment with just two screws: cases rotate 180 degrees and stems position in 10 degree increments.
• Standard lens front glass tube, red reading mercury fill or sky blue fill; the magnified lens is described as highly visible.
• Calibrated against standards traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and guaranteed accurate to plus or minus one scale division.
• Tapered bulb chamber for maximum metal-to-metal contact with a matching tapered thermowell, giving faster response and better accuracy.
• Brass swivel nut with the industry-standard 1-1/4 inch 18 UNEF thread, glass crystal, and cast aluminium stem and seat on 3.5 inch stems.
• Air duct versions with a bare bulb protected by a 3/4 inch diameter perforated aluminium guard, for circulating air.

9AL and 9FL specifications

Order code, ranges and base model numbers

The part number combines the base model number, stem length, temperature range and option code. The datasheet example is 9FLAD6-30/240F&C(S): a 9 inch plastic case, air duct, 6 inch stem, 30 to 240 F and 0 to 114 C dual scale, mercury fill, stainless steel stem and seat. Option codes are 12 (12 inch case), (B) brass stem and seat, (PC) plastic crystal, (S) stainless steel stem and seat, 58 (adjustable tilting air duct flange), and the flanged union connections 1140-9 and 1141-9.

Selection and installation

• Choose Sky Blue fill unless a mercury-filled model is specifically needed, since the datasheet says mercury models are being phased out.
• Select the aluminium (AL) or molded plastic (FL) case by site preference; the datasheet states the materials but gives no performance comparison between them.
• Use the matching tapered thermowell for metal-to-metal contact; the lagging extension series adds a lagging length T, which we read as allowance for pipe insulation.
• Order the 3.5 inch stem only in the mercury-filled aluminium and plastic forms listed in the base model table.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

A glass-tube industrial thermometer remains a simple, power-free local indicator for boilers, hot water and chilled water lines, air handling units and process skids. The air duct version suits HVAC plenum and duct measurement. The all-angle case helps when the thermometer is mounted high on a pipe rack or plant-room line.

Selection and installation notes

A thermometer or temperature transmitter is selected from the range, the stem or bulb length, the connection and the ambient conditions. Fit it in a thermowell of the right bore and length so the sensing element reaches the flow, fill the well with heat-transfer paste where the maker advises, keep the cable or case clear of heat and vibration and check the reading against a reference instrument at commissioning and at regular intervals.
