Metrel MI 2892 Power Master Class A Power Quality Analyser

Description

A hand-held Class A analyser for long-term recording and troubleshooting

The Metrel MI 2892 Power Master is a hand-held three-phase power quality analyser built to IEC 61000-4-30 Class A. Connected to a feeder, it shows harmonics, phasors and waveform anomalies on a large graphical colour display, and it records for the long term as well as for troubleshooting power quality problems in three-phase and single-phase distribution systems. Quick Set buttons give faster access to data views on site.

It has four voltage channels (0 to 1000 V RMS, CAT III / 1000 V) and four current channels with automatic clamp recognition and range selection, so the instrument sets itself up for the clamp that is connected. Power measurements follow IEEE 1459 as well as the classic vector or arithmetic method; harmonics and interharmonics are analysed up to the 50th; flicker, unbalance and mains signalling are measured, and the analysis follows EN 50160, including signalling and interharmonics. It also supports variable frequency drives (5 to 120 Hz) and 400 Hz systems, records events such as dips, swells and interruptions, monitors inrush current and records transients at 49 kS/s.

Data go to a microSD card (8 GB supplied, up to 32 GB supported). The PowerView3 PC software reads the card directly, analyses long-term records and builds a test report automatically.

Sets, clamps and typical uses

Metrel lists energy consumption optimisation, power quality assessment and troubleshooting on low and medium voltage systems, checking power factor correction equipment, long-term analysis, predictive maintenance and verifying the capacity of an electrical system before loads are added. The instrument is sold as a standard set (ST) without flexible current clamps, a Euro set (EU) with A 1227 flexible clamps and an Advanced set (AD) with A 1502 flexible clamps and further accessories. The flexible clamps need no extra power supply.

Clamp options in the leaflet include AC flexible clamps A 1501, A 1502, A 1503, A 1227, A 1445 and A 1446 up to 12000 A, iron clamps A 1281, A 1783 and A 1398, AC/DC clamps A 1391, A 1717 and A 1636 up to 2000 A DC, an I/U transducer A 1037, a GPS receiver, a 4G / Wi-Fi router, a temperature probe and a waterproof case for outdoor work.

What to confirm before ordering

Say which set you need and which phase conductors and current levels you will clamp, because the choice between flexible, iron and AC/DC clamps depends on conductor size and the current range. Confirm whether GPS time synchronisation, remote access, outdoor housings or an extra memory card are needed. If you need transient capture above 49 kS/s, see the faster Power Master XT. Specifications may change without notice, so verify the leaflet revision.

Planning a recording campaign on an Omani site

A useful power quality survey starts with a clear question. Before the MI 2892 is connected, agree with the site team whether the aim is to explain nuisance tripping, to check a feeder against EN 50160, to size a harmonic filter or capacitor bank, or simply to establish a baseline before new loads are added. The answer decides where the instrument is connected, which parameters are given priority in the recorder set-up and how long the campaign should run. A short troubleshooting session at a motor control centre needs a different approach from a week-long recording at the main incomer of a desalination plant or a cold store.

In Oman the daily load profile is strongly shaped by air conditioning and process cooling, and the difference between a summer afternoon and a winter night can be large. Recording across complete working days, including the weekend shift pattern, shows how voltage, harmonics and unbalance behave at both ends of that range. Where generators supply the plant for part of the day, note the changeover times so that frequency and voltage events can later be matched to the source in PowerView3.

Safe connection in the panel

The voltage inputs are rated CAT III / 1000 V, so connect them only at points that fall within that rating and follow the site permit-to-work and isolation rules. Fit the voltage leads and clamps with the panel in a safe state where possible, route the leads away from moving parts and busbar edges, and close the panel door or use a suitable barrier if the instrument is left recording. Check the clamp direction on every phase: the arrow should point towards the load, otherwise power and power factor readings will show the wrong sign. The phasor screen is the quickest way to confirm that each voltage channel is paired with the correct current channel before the recording is started.

Working with the recorded data

Long recordings produce a large amount of data, so plan the analysis before the card is removed. Copy the microSD contents to a project folder named after the site and feeder, and keep the original files untouched. PowerView3 can then be used to review trends, list events and prepare the automatic report. When presenting results to a client or a utility, it helps to put the event list next to the plant log so that dips, swells or interruptions can be linked to motor starts, switching operations or grid disturbances.

Harmonic results are easier to act on when they are compared at different load levels. Look at the harmonic spectrum during the peak production period and again at light load, and note which orders change with the variable frequency drives or rectifier loads on the feeder. The same approach applies to flicker and unbalance, which often follow the operation of particular machines rather than the overall load.

Care of the instrument and accessories

Dust, heat and handling are the main enemies of portable test equipment in the Gulf. Keep the MI 2892 in its carrying case when it is not in use, avoid leaving it in a closed vehicle in direct sun, and wipe the display and connectors with a dry cloth after work in dusty areas. Inspect test leads and clamp cables for cuts, crushed insulation or loose connectors before every job, and replace any damaged accessory rather than repairing it on site. Check that the date and time are correct before a campaign, because accurate time stamps are essential when events are compared with the records of other equipment. For instruments used in formal compliance work, keep the calibration certificate with the case and follow the recalibration interval set by the user’s quality system.

Documents and quotation

The Metrel leaflet is attached as a datasheet. Fixed energy meters such as the Janitza UMG 96RM panel power analyser suit permanent monitoring, while this portable analyser suits survey work; more instruments are listed in the portable test and measurement category.
