A rugged IP65 insulation tester for diagnostics up to 5 kV

The Metrel MI 3205 TeraOhmXA 5 kV is a portable insulation tester that runs from a Li-ion battery or from mains and is protected to IP65 with the case closed and IP54 with the case open. It is intended for diagnosing insulation resistance with test voltages up to 5 kV and measures up to 15 TOhm.

The test voltage is adjustable from 50 V to 5 kV in 50 V and 100 V steps. Besides the plain insulation measurement it provides diagnostic tests (PI, DAR, DD), a step voltage test, a DC withstanding voltage test up to 5 kV, high-voltage breakdown detection, user-defined tests and an auto adjustment function. Results appear in numerical and graphical form, and a guard terminal, programmable timer and capacitance measurement are included. A true RMS voltmeter and frequency meter cover supply checks up to 550 V.

For noisy substations the instrument rejects input AC current noise (1 mA at 300 V) and can average the result over 5, 10, 30 or 60 readings. It is rated CAT IV / 600 V, with a nominal working altitude increased to 3000 m, and communicates over isolated RS232 and USB ports and Bluetooth.

Applications and sets

Metrel lists power transformers, measuring transducers in distribution networks, rotating machinery and cables, high-voltage generators, surge arresters and varistors as typical test objects, together with periodic testing and maintenance on production lines and troubleshooting of all kinds of insulation problems. The HVLink PRO PC software downloads and analyses the results and prints test reports.

Two sets are listed. The standard set (ST) comes with two 2 m 10 kV shielded test leads, 10 kV crocodile clips, a 2 m guard lead, a mains cable, HVLink PRO with USB and RS232 cable, the handbook Guide to modern insulation testing on CD, the instruction manual and a calibration certificate. The Euro set (EU) replaces the standard leads with 2.5 m shielded leads fitted with large HV crocodiles. Shielded leads up to 15 m, HVX test clips and 15 m guard leads are available as options.

What to confirm before ordering

Choose the set (ST or EU) and the lead length for your test site, since long cable runs and large equipment often need leads beyond 2.5 m. Confirm whether 5 kV is enough for your procedure, whether battery operation or mains power is the main use, and which calibration documentation you need. Metrel may change specifications without notice, so check the leaflet revision at order time.
