Metrel MI 3211 TeraOhmHP 10 kV Insulation Resistance Tester

Description

A 10 kV insulation tester for demanding industrial sites

The Metrel MI 3211 TeraOhmHP 10 kV is a high-power portable insulation tester that runs from a battery or from mains and is protected to IP65 with the case closed. It analyses insulation resistance with DC test voltages up to 10 kV and measures up to 35 TOhm. Metrel states that its robustness (CAT IV measuring category) and high immunity to radiated EM fields make it best suited to demanding industrial environments.

Operation is by touch screen or keys on a menu-driven 4.3 inch colour display. Measurement functions are insulation resistance, diagnostic tests (PI, DAR, DD), step voltage, DC withstanding voltage up to 10 kV, voltage and frequency up to 600 V TRMS, capacitance, high-voltage breakdown detection and a burn or breakdown mode. Programmable AUTO SEQUENCEs, an auto adjustment function and results in numerical and graphical form help to repeat the same test on every asset, and an 8 GB SD card stores the data.

The test leads have newly designed coded banana connectors with a locking feature so they cannot be removed by accident, and the HV crocodile clips have a better grip. Input AC current noise rejection of 8 mA and AC voltage noise rejection of 1 kV, with averaging (off, 5, 10, 30, 60, 100, 200), support measurements in substations.

Typical objects and the standard set

Metrel names power transformers, measuring transducers in distribution networks, rotating machinery and cables, high-voltage generators and surge arresters, as well as periodic testing on production lines and general troubleshooting of insulation problems. The very high ranges at 10 kV are useful for large machines and long cables, where a lower-voltage instrument would not reach the resistance values that healthy insulation shows.

The standard set MI 3211 ST contains the instrument, three 3 m HV test leads with banana plug and crocodile clip (black shielded, blue, red), a power cable, USB cable, an XXL soft carrying bag, the Metrel ES Manager BASIC licence, a short instruction manual and a calibration certificate. HV leads in 3, 5, 10 and 15 m lengths, shielded versions and a lead with a test probe are listed as options.

What to confirm before ordering

Confirm the test voltage your standard requires and the lead length needed to reach the asset from a safe position. Check whether battery operation matters on site, since charging times at 10 kV are longer on battery than on mains. Also confirm the software licence, calibration certificate and carrying case. The leaflet notes that photographs may differ slightly from delivered instruments and that specifications are subject to change.

Ordering Metrel instruments: what we need

Give the complete model name and the set you want, because Metrel sells most instruments as standard, Euro or advanced sets with different leads, clamps and software licences. List the accessories separately (longer leads, current clamps, adapters), and state the standard your testing must follow. If you are unsure of the model, describe the installation, the test voltage and the measurements required.
