Hughes EXP-J-14KS/1500 Jacketed 1500 L Tank Fed Safety Shower

Description

The Hughes EXP-J-14KS/1500 is an emergency safety shower with its own 1500 litre overhead water tank, built for plants where the mains supply cannot be relied on for a full 15 minute drench. The tank is jacketed and insulated, so the stored water changes temperature slowly.

A tank fed shower that does not depend on the mains

A conventional plumbed shower is only as good as the pressure behind it. Where flow is inadequate or the supply can be interrupted, the manufacturer recommends a tank fed unit, and this 1500 litre model is the larger of the two jacketed sizes on the Hughes tank range. It is described as meeting and exceeding EN15154 and ANSI Z358.1-2014, delivering 76 litres of potable water per minute for the recommended 15 minutes.

The jacketed and insulated tank helps keep the water at a steady temperature indoors. For outdoor use in hot climates the datasheet states that a chiller unit is crucial to stop the stored water reaching dangerous levels and scalding a casualty; a Zero Power Cooler, a flameproof Zone 1 chiller and a non-flameproof chiller are listed as options. The shower is activated by a red stainless steel panic bar, with an optional GRP foot panel for hands-free use.

Where it fits, and what the tank changes

Tank showers suit remote units, tank farms, loading bays, shutdown work fronts and any location where a mains connection would need long underground runs. Because the water is stored, the unit only needs a modest 3/4 inch inlet to refill the tank through the ballcock valves, rather than a main sized for 76 litres per minute.

Hughes’ summary of EN15154 asks for tepid water, 15 to 37 C with 20 to 25 C ideal, for at least 15 minutes, a safety sign to ISO 7010 and equipment within about 20 metres or 10 seconds of the hazard. The summary also recommends a documented test at least monthly and weekly activation. A stored volume that sits in the sun will drift from those figures, so treat the chiller as part of the selection.

Hughes model Configuration Typical use
EXP-MH-14KS/350 350 L tank fed shower, immersion heated Cold sites, ATEX Zone 1 and 2 heater
STD-TC-100KS/45G Temperature controlled shower and eye wash, 300 L heated tank No hot water supply

Options and what to confirm before ordering

Listed fittings include a GRP ladder platform, GRP panels, drain sump and grating, syphon dump valve, temperature gauge, pointer type level indicator, foot panel or treadle, lighting, audible and visual alarm, the three chiller options, a sun canopy, Hydroclenz water preservative, a handheld eye, face and body shower, strip screens, anti-slip ramps, safety barriers, hose reels and a deluge tester kit. Confirm the site temperature profile, whether the location is a hazardous area, the lifting arrangement for a 340 kg unit, the tank refill supply and the foundation, since the unit is delivered as a tank structure on legs.

About brand

Hughes Safety Showers is a UK manufacturer of emergency safety showers, eye/face washes and decontamination equipment, headquartered in Stockport, England. The company traces its origin to JD Hughes Fabrications, founded in 1950, which began to manufacture emergency shower and eye wash equipment specifically in 1968, and it is now part of the Justrite Safety Group.

Emergency showers and eye washes

The Hughes range covers indoor and outdoor tank fed and plumbed-in safety showers, plumbed and self-contained eye washes, mobile safety showers and portable decontamination showers, built to meet EN15154 and ANSI Z358.1-2014. Models are offered for cold climates, hot climates and hazardous areas, and the company brochure lists ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification.
