Hughes STD-SD-31K Multi-Nozzle Cubicle Safety Shower

Description

The Hughes STD-SD-31K is a multi-nozzle emergency shower inside a GRP cubicle on a stainless steel frame, giving top-to-toe decontamination with the contaminated water held in an integral drain sump.

Top-to-toe decontamination inside an enclosed cubicle

Where a casualty must remove clothing or where splashing water should not reach the surrounding floor, a cubicle gives privacy and containment. Multiple spray nozzles fire when the person steps on the foot panel inside, so activation is instant and hands-free, which matters when hands are contaminated. The datasheet states the unit is designed to meet EN15154 and ANSI Z358.1-2014.

The integral drain sump reduces the risk of surplus contaminated water outside the shower area; the sump outlet still has to be connected to a suitable drain or treatment route. An optional closed bowl ASA eye/face wash can be mounted externally.

Layout, drainage and supply

The cubicle is 955 mm wide, comfortably above the 800 mm minimum entrance and internal width that the EN15154 summary gives for showers. The weight of 145 kg and the foot panel mean the floor must be level and rated for a fixed enclosure, and the sump drain needs a route to a collection or treatment point.

Plan the supply for the higher pressure floor of this model, 3 bar g rather than the 2 bar of pole-mounted units, because multiple nozzles need the head. Keep the cubicle in an area where it will not freeze or overheat, as its ambient range is 5 to 35 C, and add thermostatic or scald protection valves where the main temperature varies.

Hughes model Configuration Typical use
EXP-18GS/45G Floor mounted shower with ASA closed bowl eye wash Indoor plants and workshops
EXP-20GS/45G Floor mounted shower with body spray and eye wash Indoor, extra lower-body rinse
LAB-18GS/34G Floor mounted laboratory shower with eye wash Laboratories, light duty
LAB-23GS/V Ceiling mounted laboratory shower Space-limited laboratories

Options and what to confirm before ordering

Listed options are a walk-on foot panel, shower and eye wash sign, lighting, audible and visual alarm, thermostatic mixing, freeze protection, scald protection and pressure reducing valves, strip screens, anti-slip ramps, a pedestal mounted retractable hose reel and a deluge tester kit. A related model, STD-SD-31K/V, adds a detergent inducer and hose brush. Confirm access for wheelchair or stretcher use, the drain connection and the supply pressure.

How the Hughes STD-SD-31K works

The STD-SD-31K is an emergency shower inside a closed cubicle. A person steps in and presses the foot panel, which opens the stay-open ball valve. Water flows from the 1 in inlet to several nozzles that spray the body from head to foot. The valve stays open until it is shut by hand, so the person can concentrate on rinsing. The water falls into the integral sump, which keeps contaminated water off the surrounding floor.

Where the Hughes STD-SD-31K is used

  • Chemical plants and laboratories
  • Battery rooms
  • Process areas with acids and caustics
  • Areas where clothing must be removed in private
  • Workshops with splash risk

Selection checklist for the Hughes STD-SD-31K

  • Cubicle size of 955 by 998 by 2409 mm
  • Water inlet of 1 in male BSP
  • Supply pressure of 3 to 6 bar g
  • Shower flow of at least 76 L/min
  • Ambient range of 5 to 35 degrees C
  • Drain or treatment route for the sump
  • Optional ASA closed bowl eye/face wash
  • Floor load for 145 kg

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the STD-SD-31K

Set the cubicle on a level floor, fix it down and connect the 1 in supply. Connect the sump outlet to a drain or collection point. Check the supply pressure and, if it is above 6 bar g, add a pressure reducing valve. Test the foot panel and the flow every week, flush stale water, and record each test. Keep the area clear of obstructions.
