Hughes EXP-20GS/45G Safety Shower with Body Spray and Eye Wash

Description

The Hughes EXP-20GS/45G adds an integral body spray to the standard overhead shower and ASA closed bowl eye/face wash, so a casualty is rinsed from head and from the lower body at the same pull of the handle.

Overhead drench plus lower-body spray

Chemical splashes often land on legs and clothing as well as the face. In this unit the body spray is triggered when the pull rod starts the shower, directing water at the lower part of the body. The datasheet gives a combined shower and body spray flow of 115 litres per minute (30 US gal/min) and 12 litres per minute for the eye wash, against the ANSI Z358.1-2014 minimum of 76 litres per minute for the shower alone.

The ASA eye wash is chemical and UV resistant, with a lid that protects the bowl and diffusers. The unit is supplied with a safety shower and eye/face wash sign, and the datasheet notes it is also available with a top water inlet.

Choosing it over the plain shower and eye wash

Select the body spray version when the process involves splashing liquids at waist height, such as decanting, sampling or pump maintenance, and when the supply can carry the higher combined flow. The plain EXP-18GS/45G has the same height and inlet but a smaller footprint, 782 mm deep against 1095 mm here, so check the floor space and the 400 mm clearance around the shower head recommended in the EN15154 summary.

As with other unheated units, the water temperature follows the supply. The standards summaries ask for tepid water between about 15 and 38 C, so where the cold main runs warm or cold a thermostatic mixing valve, listed as an option, is the usual answer.

Hughes model Configuration Typical use
EXP-18GS/45G Floor mounted shower with ASA closed bowl eye wash Indoor plants and workshops
STD-SD-31K Multi-nozzle cubicle shower, GRP enclosure Full-body drench with drain sump
LAB-18GS/34G Floor mounted laboratory shower with eye wash Laboratories, light duty
LAB-23GS/V Ceiling mounted laboratory shower Space-limited laboratories

Options and what to confirm before ordering

Listed options are a foot panel or treadle, sign, lighting, audible and visual alarm, thermostatic mixing valve, pressure reducing valve, shower rose, handheld eye, face and body shower, modesty curtain and GRP safety barriers. Confirm that the main can supply the combined flow, the inlet position, drainage of the discharged water and the finish. The unit is not temperature controlled in its standard form.

How the Hughes EXP-20GS/45G works

A person pulls the handle and the stay-open ball valve lets water flow. Water falls from the overhead shower and sprays at the lower body at the same time. For the eyes, the person pulls the lid down and the eye wash starts. Water keeps flowing until the valve is closed.
