Grandstream HT818 8-Port FXS Gateway with Gigabit NAT Router

Description

The Grandstream HT818 is an 8-port FXS analog telephone adapter (VoIP gateway) with an integrated Gigabit NAT router. It lets eight analog phones, fax machines or intercom handsets register to a SIP server through two 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports, with 2 SIP profiles, T.38 fax relay, wideband codecs and TR-069 provisioning.

It is a compact desktop or shelf unit measuring 180 x 120 x 36 mm and weighing 356 g, powered from a 12 V 1.5 A adapter.

Keeping analog phones and fax lines alive on a SIP network

Hotels, hospitals, factories, government buildings and older offices have analog handsets and wiring that still works. An FXS gateway like the HT818 gives each RJ11 port a dial tone and ring voltage, converts calls to SIP and sends them to a PBX such as Grandstream UCM or a hosted service. Eight ports on one box means a whole floor of room phones or a bank of fax and alarm-dialler lines can be migrated without replacing handsets. The integrated router lets the unit sit between the LAN and the broadband uplink where needed.

Features from the datasheet

  • 8 RJ11 FXS ports; can be expanded by peering with another FXS gateway
  • Two 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports and a high-performance NAT router
  • T.38 compliant Group 3 fax relay up to 14.4 kbps with auto-switch to G.711 pass-through
  • Wideband codecs: G.711 with PLC and VAD/CNG, G.722, G.723.1, G.729A/B, G.726-32, iLBC, Opus; dynamic jitter buffer and line echo cancellation
  • Supports 2 SIP profiles and 3-way voice conferencing per port
  • Strong AES encryption with a unique security certificate per unit; secure provisioning using TR-069

Choosing between ATA sizes

The same family offers 1-port, 2-port and 8-port models, and the HT818 is the largest on this datasheet set. Choose it when you have six to eight analog lines in one rack or closet, since one device, one power supply and one provisioning record are simpler than four 2-port adapters. If you need to bridge a PSTN trunk, an FXS gateway is the wrong device because it serves handsets, not telco lines; use an FXO gateway for that.

Setup and provisioning

Connect WAN to the upstream switch, LAN to a local PC if the router is used, and plug handsets into PHONE1 to PHONE8. Register each port to the SIP server by profile, pick codecs (G.711 for fax, G.722 or Opus for speech), and enable T.38 for fax. TR-069 or HTTPS provisioning with AES encrypted configuration allows bulk deployment. For fax, test in G.711 pass-through if the carrier does not support T.38.

Applications in GCC buildings

Typical uses are hotel guest-room telephones, hospital ward phones, factory shop-floor phones and old PBX replacement in government offices where analog wiring remains. Keep the unit in a ventilated rack within 0 to 50 C, since sealed cabinets in uncooled plant rooms can exceed that in summer.

Selection and installation notes

A voice gateway is chosen from the number of analog ports and the SIP server it connects to. Confirm the line type, the fax needs, the dial plan and the codecs before ordering, keep the analog cabling short, protect the unit from power surges and provision it with the account details of the PBX or service provider.
